GQ Radiator and overheating question

hi all
got an 88 GQ TD4.2
this moring on the way to work i put the heater on in the "cycle" mode, use air from inside the car, instead of "draw" from outside, and no sooner had i done it the temp went through the roof, so i pulled over, all was good, put it into draw mode and it stayed wher it has for the past 2 months since ibought it, normal. When i got to work i noticed there is no water in any of the hoses, yet the overflow was full and the rad had water in it
Is there an air pocket in the system, and if so how the fork do i bleed it out of there
I dont know how long its been like it, but the engine has not over heated and its had plenty of trashings since then.
Cheers
