Am told by 2 Diesel/LPG organisations that they can legally remove the muffler and have a straight thru pipe to allow an LPG tank to be fitted to my cruiser. One claimed the muffler (and its a big bugger) was fitted for the US market.

If legal I may still require a piece of paper to convince a Copper in Hicksville that I do not need a muffler, if I am pulled up for any reason. What do I need?

More importantly will the removal of the muffler impact the power/fuel economy of my LC we tow a 21'6" van. I recall when my kids were young and raced motorX, mufflers were an important part of the performance of their bikes, admittently they were 2 stroke .

LPG on HJ61 88TD need to remove Muffler to fit 35Lt Tank.

Yes 2 stroke is a completely different world in that respect and most fo their performance is derived from the pipe work.
Is this the only muffler in the system and is there a turbo or not. If no turbo and no muffler at all the noise will be unbearable for highway work and illegal no doubt anyway due to the noise level.
If turbo then noise won't be too bad, I run my 80 with no mufflers at all and it's quite OK.
However not sure about SA but up here in Qld it doesn't matter how quiet your truck/car is if you have no mufflers and it came with one then it's illegal. If it's illegal in SA you can always look at putting a good free flowing and small muffler somewhere else in the system. Wouldn't matter where for legalities as long as it's there.

I'd be interested to see how you go ith this Peter, I have been considering the LPG myself. My exhaust is 2.5" and I wouldn't hesitate removing the mufffler for the lpg.

if you ran with no mufflers and the vehicle was under the decibel limit it would be legal.
if you have a turbo, the straightter and unrestricted the exhaust is, the better.
with a 2 stroke, probably the most importatnt part of the pipe is the expansion chamber

I own an HJ61 with LPG.
I had the tank fitted under the fuel tank. It's a 20L (useable) tank made by Manchester (I think). A simple modification was made to the spare wheel cross brace to mount the tank. I run the 7.50R16 spare inside the car - like an XJ Cherokee. I've not hit the tank when off road - yet.
There is not enough room in front of the rear axle for an LPG tank - it will hang WAY low.
I have a Beaudesert Exhaust turbo dump pipe and 3 inch system with only a 12 inch hot-dog sytle muffler. The turbo is a muffler anyway..... Exhaust note is not loud, but noticeable outside the truck. Turbo whistle is COOL. Spool is lower in rev range too. Running max 10psi at the moment.
My truck has a manual trans with 33in Dick Cepeks. The LPG is really good in third gear (ratio gap between 2nd & 3rd is too big). The performance on the highway and towing is great. The LPG system is torquegas - manifold vacuum. It draws vapour from the tank - not liquid. $3K - minus $2K from Fed Gov.
I'm about to intercool it and then run some dyno tests. PWR will build a custom 600x300x50 cooler with 2.5in pipes. The only real drama is making a new manifold connection for the intake. Will increase max boost to 13psi. I do have a pyro fitted. Max 500 degC post turbo. Highway cruise 280-300.

if you ran with no mufflers and the vehicle was under the decibel limit it would be legal. Is that the case in NSW where you are and does that apply in SA where Peter is cause here in QLD it's not the case at all. Doesn't matter how quiet the car is if there is no muffler it is illegal.
