engine cuts out

Post by 4x4xmore »

Not sure if this has been covered before, I did a search but did not find anything.

I have a 4.2 petrol and on start up it runs for a few seconds then dies, it restarts easy and even with a few revs it still dies. once its going it sometimes (short trip down the road) cuts out while driving, if you pump the gas pedal it clutch starts while its still rolling. It has just started doing this and I want to rectify it before I am stuck on the side of the road.

I have replaced the plugs, fuel filter not to long ago and it is running a crane xr700 ignition....

It also wont idle on gas but i suspect that this is a seperate issue. I have it booked into a gas shop next week, but I am hoping to remedy the petrol problem before it gets there........

HAs anyone got any thoughts or suggestions????

Thanks

Has it still got the diode on the gaurd (the white rectangular thing)? They can play up.

Also gas and petrol cutoff solenoids can can, when they are old, work for a bit, but as soon as they heat up from being open, they die and close again.

I had often thought (before i got my diesel shorty and gave up on the petrol LOL) about taking the diode out, as I have a pertronix ignitor instead of points. The idea of the diode is to reduce your 12-14V to about 6V i think it is so that your points don't burn out as easily. Something like that to do with the points. So my theory was that I could remove it (assuming that the pertronix could handle 12-14V and that I also changed my coil from a resistor model to a non-resistor model), but i never got around to finding out if it was possible.
