Paint help??

Post by speedracer006 »

Hey all, im picking an FJ40 this week, all in good nick, just needs paint. Now i have a few options i guess, I have a mate who can paint it for $400 plus materials whos a pano. I could probably do it myself i have an air compressor and paint gun but then materials will probably cost more. Enamel or 2-pac?? Ive used enamel heaps before but new to the 2-pac thing. Anyone know how 2 use it? What do you guys reckon i should do? I want it as cheap as possible as im a bit short of ca$h but i still want a lasting paint job that will be able to take getting scratched through the bush and stuff. I have average backyard painting experience. CHeers boys and girls

If you have a mate who will do it for $400 + materials, get him to do it.

Then post up his number so I can get him to do my ute.

thats what i thought too, he charges $400 per day + materials, so it could cost more depending on how good you want it, how much work the car may need etc etc. but that price for me was just like bare minimum just to get paint on the car. ill give him a call and find out if he wants some more work i know hes pretty flat out

Laying the paint is easy. If it were me I'd pay him the $400 to do all the prep and body work then lay the paint myself.
YMMV.

Being an FJ40 i'd say there a hell of a lot more then a days work in preperation. I'm a painter by trade and will spend up to a week on preperation before painting a new Lexus if it's only been 2 bobbed. So even a basic paint job that you want to look half decent would require atleast a weeks prep work.

As for laying the paint being easy. If you want a half decent job get a painter to do it as it's not easy to lay it flat with minimum orange peel, minimum dirt, no sovient boil, no runs, no mottle etc. Although what most people may be happy with I probably wouldn't be.

Cheers Mick.

I'd 2nd this
I owned a panel shop for 7 years and am also a painter by trade
and micks dead right
you may pull of an acceptable job but you will fair much better getting a painter to do this part for you.besides he will know what to do if you run into problems(silicone ,peal ,color match reduction rates temp runs etc)paints not cheap you might as well get the best from it.
by the way id two pac it
if cost is the issue get cheap two pac it's still better than the best enamel
cheers and good luck andrew
