Engine conversion for LJ50
Picked up a LJ50 today, mainly for use as a shooting buggy. Its still got the stroker in it (runs) but will proberly prove a bit smokey for its intended use, so would't mind doing an engine conversion on it. It MAY end up regoed one day so rather a swap with limited rego hassles and preferably a 5 speed box.
Was thinking Suzuki 1L but what 5 speed will/can be made to fit. Would it be better to fit latter 1L or 1.3L Sierra diffs or adapt discs to the origionals.
Any ideas/tips would be appreciated.

for ease I would just put a 1L and 4 speed gear box, keeping the lj transfer and diffs!
if its a shooting buggy then its not going to need heavier duty diffs, so the lj diffs will be good and have a low ratio as well.
I'm pretty sure the disc brakes can be put onto these diffs
and you wont have a drama with rego

just crossed over from the nissan forum,
i have a LJ80 that i'm remaking into a trail rig and i have and deciding on a 4ag with a toyota T50 5sp or the Free way with a nissan Z24 and 5sp
now im not saying a 4ag or Z24 would be the best for you, but one of the earlier KE corolla era 3K,4K,5K motors would do the job nicely, all you would have to do is set the motor in as high as possible and weld up a new gearbox cross member all the electrics from the LJ as far a wiring will crossover to the corolla motor

Not going to help you out much but this is what I will stick in the LJ when it get all fixed you next winter
Its a swift turbo motor , a G10a so the 413 box bolts on the back of it . Nice small fit and still suzuki .
For a cheap swap just get a 413 engine and box , better chance of fitting in the tunnel than a t50 etc , let alone the nissan box .

I think the 1L sierra front disc swivel; hubs will essentially bolt onto the LJ front axles. However they may not work too well unless you use the 1L front disk Sierra master cylinder also (to suit). I havn't done this, but I believe it is the case, so please verify.
Wheeling on completely wicked angles, without even looking stable.
i have to say... i would keep the 2 stroke.. one of THE coolest things i have ever herd was a Lj50 playing in the mud with a Proper bike exaust pipe some how attached.. it sounded mental.. it would be sad to get rid of that awsomness!!!
and also where did swifts come out turbo?? rotazuk?? also u have a gti motor sitting behind that.. u have to many toys

OK, had a play with the little thing today and looks like its got a leaking head gasket. I can get another stroker motor and box for nix, and maybe a LJ80 motor as well. Or just fix this one. Dispite pressurising tha radiator, the very crappy plugs and dirty points, it ran susprisingly well.
If i was to go the 1L Suzuki route (looks best for my needs), do i use the origional box or the Sierra box? How much should i be paying for a s/h 1L motor and box?
Googled a bit and it looks like the LJ50 has lower diff and transfer ratios than most zooks. So maybe i can change diff ratios, run a moderate sized tyre (205R16???) with the lower LJ50 transfer gearing and not need the 5 speed box if it ends up with plates on it.

Get a good set of reeds, tune the carb (will probably need new jets) and fit a 1 3/4" exhaust system, with a good expansion chamber. Maybe even replace the carb with triple mikunis.
Run a good synthetic 2 stk oil will fix the smokey problem. I used AMSOIL, and had NO smoke, once warm.
The Hardtop and soft top had different ratios, softy was higher (lower geared) from memory.

The motor that fits best in a LJ is a 2 stroke,they have an extremely high gearbox/crankshaft (notice the cooling fan is on the crankshaft) and any motor bigger than a 1 litre will just make it nose heavy top heavy and just a little scary down steep dropoffs. This won't worry Joeblow's hotrod because he'll be able to lower all that with the V6 and 2wd. I once bought a Stockman LJ80(parts car) with Datsun A15 GX twin SU motor and it was easy to endo badly geared and unstable.If you still want to go 4stroke I could swap you an 800cc LJ80 motor,gearbox ,transfer and diff centres for the 2 stroke ones. But then it won't fit under the bonnet (but I also have one of those).If you get the 2stroke running properly and warm you'll find it isn't that smoky anyhow.
So, when considering a engine swap, light weight is a major concern? The stroker looks like a VERY light lump.

Went and had a look at an LJ80 (or most of a lj80) today. It has a 3K + 4-speed and a few bits i could use/need. It was regoed with the 3k years ago. No radiator, fuel tank, LH guard, windscreen but fair bit of rust......$50.00
Questions-
Are the 4 and 5 speeds a direct replacement for each other, or are there differances?
Are the LJ50/80 body mounts the same (put 50 body on 80 chassis), or better to change the spring mounts on the 80 housing to suit the 50 chassis?
Can the 3K be mounted far enough rearward so a decent radiator can be fitted without cutting the front grill/radiator suport up?

Don't know about 4 & 5 spds( I assume you mean corolla ones). A lj50 body fits on a LJ 80 chassis because I just put a 80 tub on a 50 chassis today. Only issue was the rear tow point seemed a little offset and 1 rear body bolt was 2-3 mm out ,probably only individual vehicles.If you move the 80 spring perches in it will give you good travel on the 50 chassis.I did that and used longer shocks and fiddled wide track springs and it ramps 150mm further than it's wheelbase,had to get longer brake hoses but. If you try to move the motor / box back check how short the primary driveshaft already is first and also you'll probably have to move the steering box ie; use a sierra one. Have you tried to fit a bonnet on it? Does this mean you're selling me the 2 stroke? If you're thinking of chopping the bonnet don't I can swap you for a LJ80 one.
The 3K is still in the parts car (LJ80) and bonnet shuts ok. The worrying bit was the transfer was obviously move back and the front radiator suport/grill abd bonnet was cut to fit a radiator .

Hey Guys, I used to own an LJ80. What an awesome little rig.
All I did to mine was, weld the rear diff bung on some hankook muds and chuck the doors away, great fun.......until it rolled ass over tit!
There used to be a website lj10.com, used to have all sorts of info for conversions etc. regarding the disc brake and engine conversions.
