patrol or cruiser

Post by harks »

hey guys i currently have a petrol hilux, awesome ute but not enough power to tow a tool trailer, which is what im going to be doing soon on a daily basis.
i am thinking about buying a diesel patrol or cruiser ute around $25000.
just wondering about the fuel consumption on both of these and also how they compare. im a big toyota fan but thought it may be worth getting a patrol (turbo) compatred to the stock 4.2 cruiser.
cheers andy

Probably but a factory turbo Pootrol
I know a bloke who will be selling one soon to dont know how much thou
Should be able to find a gu for that much
I think it would be better than an after market turbo 75 series
Just my thoughts anyway

go either really.

anything 4.2 turbo will be good.
from factory i think the cruiser has a few more berries?
i like the patrols, if you want to 4wd i would go the coil sprung GU or GQ with turbo, and just get polyairs to stop it sagging in the rear end with the trailer on.
97 GQ patrol coilcab. TD42, safari turbo kit with fiddled turbo, D-GAS kit. dyno results to come...
4inch lift, king springs, efs and procomp shocks
315/70R16 cooper ST's
found fuel economy...

the cruisers got slightly more power from factory but the patrols can make some pretty awesome power with a good tune and exhaust... the patrols also have a stronger driveline and the option of coil springs in the rear... not to mention the fact that the patrol is wayyy more comfy
01 td42 GU patrol ute, with extra bits and pieces.

They will both do the job your are asking of them equally.. Stating a patrol is stronger is a misconception that the entire vehicle is built better.
For the most part, a landcruiser is plenty strong enough for any task. Yes a patrol does have a stronger driveline, but a landcruiser has a better all round build quality and thus maintains a higher re-sale value.
My suggestion would be to spend the time driving one of each and pick the vehicle that suits you and your needs better as they will both do what you want them to, but one will probably do it to your styling better.

I was asking exactly the same questions when I was deciding between buying Cruiser or Patrol. Compare the following and the decision is pretty easy I reckon:
Chassis cross section.
Driveline cross section.
Size of diffs (esp rear leaf sprung Patrol).
Size of gearbox.
Donk simplicity.
Driver/passenger ergonomics.

My eyes nearly popped out when I rolled under one of each and compared. That's when I saw the light. Just my HO though.

don't be decieved by the size of the pootrol chassis thinking bigger is stronger because it's not the case. pootrol chassis are notorious for being crap except for on outerlimits where everyone wants to make love to nissans and thinks they're gods gift.

patrols are a better comp truck and toyotas are better daily drivers by that much it's not funny. i know 90% of people on outerlimits will disagre but thats life.

one of my mates is selling his gu turbo diesel because it is that much of a sh1t heap that he would prefer to drive a 45 series.

but for your price you're prob looking at 75s and not 79s unless you want to go n/a.
