Vitara 4.625 Centres
Vitara 4.625 Centres
I thought I'd post up the results of getting this done.
Vitara 4.625 Crown/Ring & Pinion into 88.5 WT Diffs as it was difficult to find anything really concrete when I searched, there was info of course and it was all good but not all in one spot.
Check the Bible it will give you what will fit, also check here http://www.lepayne.com/gears.html to see how various combinations of tyres, gears and Transfer Case ratios etc will work out. Great site.
I've got 31s and just the 4.625 ratios in the diff and I've now got 5th gear back and cruise at 100ks happily at about 3800rpm, with 235s on it absolutely flew (for a zook that is.)
I would recommend anyone who is getting lockers or spools in to do this at the same time, it only cost me $175 per set, so $350 + labour but if you are doing lockers it would be money really well spent.
I had to get rid of a heap of Barter Card and Suzi Sport at Springwood take it and always do a great job anyway.
Really good mod especially if you are doing lockers at the time, less stress on the Transfer Case this way also.

i agree and glad to hear. oh and 10 bucks they are reliable for many years to come. ( waiting for all the t/case boys.......... )

mmmmm...auto's. seriously most of us run 5.1's, 33's and 1600 efi's and no one has ever complained about it being not low enough. but those of us with duals have freaked a bit when in too low a gear and locked up down a slippery hill. most of our group have had t/case gears and now only diff gears and won't go back, thier choice and we aint knocking t/case gears, is just a package we are happy with in many aspects.

Money, money, money.
I wish I had, 35s and 6.4s and 5.12 diffs with Coilover and 1.6 efi with a blower attached.
What I got is what I can have and had the $ for at the time. The diff ratio for those that are thinking of doing it on the cheap works well.
I've got a lift lockers and diff gears with good rubber, I want more but bang for buck and driving it on the highway it's great, if you can do 2 things at once rather than pull apart diff and transfer and put all the new seals and bearings into 1 instead of 2 it's a great alternative.
All points of view welcome NIK. Gears are on the list, trust me, just waiting til the $US crashes in the next few weeks and to see how we are traveling at the time.
I just wanted to put the info up in case someone else thinks along these lines, it's not common to hear a lot on people doing diffs, generally everyone goes straight to Gearing.

I tried an auto, once that was enough! 4.6 diffs 4.16 t/c 32s with a a15 and 3 speed auto. Put it up to a ledge give it heaps and the auto would just slip
Got another box checked by an auto place put it in, still the same!!!
Any way I got my 4.6 diff gears from Suzi for wreckers, very cheap both centres were half the price others wanted for one centre.

yep, 3 speeds are crap. if you ever go efi try the 4 speed electronic, totaly different compared to the 'trimatic', and bullet-proof.

Another possible job worth doing when getting the locker installed along with your diff gear swap is to replace the crush sleeve with a solid spacer.
I've never seen it happen - but apparently under load it is possible to damage the crush sleeve which will result in unhappiness as the pinion will have fore and aft movement on the ring gear.
This mod would hopefully go part of the way toward protecting your investment in your diff centres - especially since the 4.6 and 5.12 will have smaller (finer) teeth on the pinion.

just on the auto thing,
I'm using a c4 auto (3 speed)
strong box and often get used as a drag gearbox, they can be built for alot of power, although that does come at a cost!
to buy a stocker is cheap, I need to rebuild this with another main shaft so I brought one that was slipping, for $50
and they are tiny and dont weigh much
and on the diff gears Vs transfer gears. it depends on your needs, an auto can help along way with torque rather than using the lower transfer gears, but only to a reasonable point and an oil cooler would be a must!
I am planning on using stock transfer gears in my truck and adjust the gearing by using diff gears, as I'm using hilux diffs I have a cheap way of changing ratios to suit my needs. I plan to have it drive at reasonable highway revs and let the converter do the rest. see how it goes!
my first truck I put 5.12's in with 31 simex and it was a goo combo, but I still needed more low range reduction!

i think he means "Suzi Auto Services" in springwoodmach.25 wrote:Suzi Sport Springwood.ofr57 wrote:where did you get the gears from?
$157 a set I think.
they were $195 for the crownwheel and pinion per end (from memory), then the labour involved in removing the old diffs , setting up the c/w and pinion , fitting what bearings and seals that were needed , refitting , etc etc.
that's a bit different might have to give graham a callsuzimad wrote:i think he means "Suzi Auto Services" in springwoodmach.25 wrote:Suzi Sport Springwood.ofr57 wrote:where did you get the gears from?

yeah good luck the last 2 4.6 c/w and pinion went into his car.ofr57 wrote:that's a bit different might have to give graham a callsuzimad wrote:i think he means "Suzi Auto Services" in springwoodmach.25 wrote:Suzi Sport Springwood.ofr57 wrote:where did you get the gears from?
