im looking at buying my second 4wd soon, and haven been tossing a fe ideas round for the last year, and have settled on a gq,
i know what i want out of the truck, and i think a gq(having been tried and tested) would provide me the perfect starting point.
first couple of things i want out of it are, to run 35s, and chop into a ute,
i think id be proficient enough with a grinder and a welder to do the chop my self, but having never done one or knowing any one to that has done one, and having my work as the only place i could do it ( would have to be in and out within a week end which would take me knowing what im doing which at this point i dont)(and i may have a mates shed which i can borrow when i am ready to undertake the chop) i dropped in to ontrack 4x4 this after noon to see roughly how much it would be, and got told 3800 bare metal, more for paint and tray,
then i was reading a post on here bout dual cabs and paul from kustom cages said they do it for 1300 bare metal, i thought that was a fair bit of difference for only having two more doors, now i know kustom is in queensland and im in melb so that doesnt help me, is there a few other mobs i should talk to? or where alternatively can i look to get the information to do it my self,( i did a search and with how many posts came back i just couldnt sit here for ever reading them)
also i was wondering(and forgot to ask) that is it possiable that ontracks price included getting the engineer in to have the chop enginered??(supose i should ask them)
adding to getting the chop done with them i asked about getting a cage put in, just in case i went down the comp line eventualy, and that price came to a total of 6600(chop and cage). is that about average? or is that steep??
my other question is about fitting the tyres... i want to stay away form lift as much as i can, and the bloke from ontrack said 3 inch suspension, and some gaurd chopping would be the absolute minimum for 35s, im quite happy to cut away as much as possible as its only going to be a week end bush basher, so whats the go? just a bit of choping and 3 inch??(as i know that suspension doesnt help clear tyres i dont see what the 3 inch will do as the bumpstops are in the same spot??)
also, boggers and swampers are the exact same thing yes?? or are they diffrent types of tyres? i just googled them and both names came up together, and seperatly.
as im thinking ither boggers or simex, not sure 100% i do a fair bit of everything, but i do like mud....

i did my own cut and unless the weekind goes flawless there is no wat you will do it in a weekend
sure cut the back off and seam weld it up in a weekend but not finish it!
i went in thinking that it could be done that way and took 2 weekends in end to get it under primer.
and it cost me
$88 for the 2mm sheet
$45 bog
$30 primer
$50 consumables (cutting disks etc)
$200-300 beer
so i think that the charge is a bit much but you need to see that thease compenys do this work for profit not cost!!!!!!!
so if you can do it your self (and seems like you dont want the best job as it is no show pony any way)

im not to worryed about the job as such, but its making sure the authorities dont mind it and also getting a cage done at the same time.
cutting and welding apannel in wouldnt be the hard bit ive done alot harder welding than that, but i dont want it to look like thats what i did, i would like it to have the "factory" look...

Because the cab is bloody useless. IF you are 6foot tall the seat will be pushed hard up against the back wall. I am currently building an extra cab ute for them reasons (should have just enough room for a 40lt engel behind the seats).

agreeing with turps here. plus i havnt seen a gq ute in as good a nick as a wagon for nearly the same price i can buy a wagon and chop it. and even when they are they are leafs,
then there's the fact i will be removing as much of the rear chassis as possible and there for having a smaller tray regardless so a full sized tray is of no use to me.
