80 Series Viscous Fan Clutch

Post by vSAHARAx »

Are the Viscous fan clutches the all the same?

I know the 1HZ and 1HD-T are the same. But is the 1HD-FT and 1HD-FTE the same as the 1HD-T?

Summary of stuff from LCOOL - courtesy Brian M
This is my current setup.
Radiator..... Original from 1999....new fluid with 50% glycol every two years.
Fan ..... genuine Toyota 16361-17010 for 80 series 1HZ. My original fan was a 16361-17030 with red ID spot.
Fan clutch.... Original from 1999 16210-17070 with orange/red ID spot.
Thermostat ... original thermostat still fitted.
I only use genuine parts as I have found the aftermarket stuff not up the standard of the genuine Toyota parts.

Part numbers for fan and clutches for Australia are

HZJ105r 1HZ
Fan 9801 -> 9903 ..... 16361-17030 red ID spot
Fan 9903 onwards 16361-17040 blue ID spot
Clutch 9801 onwards 16210-17070 red/orange ID spot

HDJ100r 1HDFTE
Fan all years ..... 16361-17040 blue ID spot
Clutch all years .... 16210-17050 silver/none ID spot
The different fans and clutches are the same dimensions and are interchangeable.

Note that the 16361-17040 fan with the blue ID spot is a very flexible fan that can destroy the radiator on minor water crossings.

If the is NO chance that you will do any water crossings, you can fit a 16361-17040 blue ID spot fan to a HZJ105r 1HZ as this fan will move the most air. Best used with a 16210-17050 clutch.

16361-17030 fitted to 105r 1HZ diesel ->3/1999 and all 70 series turbo diesels. Red ID mark
16361-17040 fitted 3/1999 -> to 105r 1HZ and all turbo diesels 100 series. Blue ID mark. (Likely Radiator Damage)
The fan you need to fit which is part number 16361-17010. It is a straight swap with no other modifications needed. This fan is listed for a 80 series diesel and is the best fan to fit to overcome the problem. I bought mine from Toyota. It has a yellow ID spot on one blade.

There is another difference the 1HZ and the 1HDT, they have different fan couplings. The 1hz has 16210-17070 with a red/orange shaft and the 1HDT has 16210-17050 with a silver/natural shaft.

Does the fan coupling contribute to the radiator damage? I have compared my fan coupling 16210-17070 with red painted shaft with 16210-17050 and the 16210-17050 comes in at a lower temperature.

When Toyota fits the 16361-17040 fan to Turbo diesels they also fit fan coupling 16210-17050.
Summary
With fan 16361-17040 they fit fan coupling 16210-17050 with silver painted shaft. 100 series diesels after 3/99
With fan 16361-17030 they fit fan coupling 16210-17070 with red painted shaft. 100 series diesels up 3/99
With fan 16361-17040 they fit fan coupling 16210-17070 with red painted shaft. 78/79 series 1HDFTE and 1HZ
With fan 16361-17010 they fit fan coupling 16210-17010 for the 1HZ 80 series and fit 16210-17021 or 16210-17020 for 1HDFT motor 80 series and 1HZ 75 series.
All these couplings have similar dimensions and are physically interchangeable
