There were a couple of reasons:
1. Spiking to over 2000RPM on a cold start with no oil flow can't be good for engine (or timing chain
) wear2. If you've got an auto you'd be familiar with it "straining" against the brakes until the coolant is up to temp. I've actually nearly had an accident from this (combined with cold brake pads I nearly entered an interesction instead of stopping like I intended to

It should be equally applicable for the 2.5l Grand Vitara engine as well.
