1L Trasfer Case

Post by ice_berg86 »

i bought a 1L transfer case the other day and when i got it home i noticed the input shaft from the gear box has about 5mm play in it until it starts to engage the other output shafts.

does anyone have any what the problem is and how to fix it.

That doesn't sound excessive to me.

The only way to "fix" this is a replacement set of gears but I'd be pretty sure the new set would have about the same amount of play.

Put it in and run it. If it's not noisy call it good.

gearsets that fit 1.3 cases will also fit 1.0 cases with a 4WD light.

There are no aftermarket gears for non shift light (early) 1.0 cases.

Up untill recently i was running a 1ltr case and 5mm of turn till the other outputs starts to turn is fine.

Doubt you will find any replacement gears for a 1ltr t/case but they are cheap enough just to get another case. Should be able to get bearing reco kits for them still.

bearings in the 1 litre (with 4wd switch) and 1.3 cases are the same and as gwagensteve said the gears are interchangable.

5mm backlash is not excessive for a sierra case.

I don't think it's that clear cut.

My take is that the 4wd lights boxes went into JX sierras with disc front ends. Commercial sierras stayed with the non light box.

I might be wrong, but my 83 trayback doesn't have a light but an 83 JX 1.0 SWB does.

I put new gears and bearings into my 1.3 transfer and I found similar amount of play as you are describing after replacing the lot, tis fine.

non light 1ltr cases are worth what ever you want to pay for them. I used to pay anywhere from $20 each to $70 each. depending on condition.
You will pay alot more from a wreckers yard

The condition of these boxes will be "variable" now and as they can't take gears or cheap rebuild kits (as in ex US) disconnects, disk park brakes, twinsticks or any other off the shelf coolness along with funny flanges, I vote not over $200 (for one in known quiet smooth nick) and should be closer to a slab.
