Feroza airfilter- plastic sleeve thingy??

Another question- I was checking the factory bog standard airfilter and found a tight fitting plastic sleeve that fitted over the filter inside the canister. It had radial fan blades on it at one end.

I removed it as it was blocking over half the surface area of the filter- what purpose does it serve? (and should I refit it?)

Take the orig air filter out and replace with a K&N or MRT Ram Pod air filter . If $$$ are an issue than go to your local auto shop and get a cheapy sports filter , I did this before the snorkle mod . Take the whole air filter system out and use the down pipe from the black box and re-use one of the 90' bends from the remaining plumbing , You will notice a slight power increase and a great GRUNTING sound , you'll love it , from here on the bug will bite and more Mods will happen

Money is a bit of an issue at the moment..... But things will start changing soon! I'm a big fan of K&N filters, and will be putting one on soon for city driving, but I wouldn't fancy using one in dusty conditions

I found out that bit I was asking about is supposed to swirl the air inside the filter canister and cause the large dust particles to hit the outside canister wall, rather than them getting sucked straight into the filter. Thus keeping the airfilter cleaner longer!

The plastic thingy on your standard air cleaner element is designed to spread the air around the element. It doesnt block the element, cause there is a 1cm or so gap between the plastic and the element surface. If this isnt there, the incoming air (laden with dust, mud, water, leaves, ect) is continually directed at one spot on the element. This would, no doubt, prematurely wear out that spot, possibly allowing unfiltered air to enter your engine.

I'm only driving around on sealed roads at the moment so it shouldn't be a problem.

The one on mine didn't have a decent gap around it either- there would have been less than 0.5cm! It looked like it would have drastically been reducing air flow ...

Possibly the gap was smaller because it's some cheap and nasty aftermarket filter?
