Bolting an older T400to an LS1 From what I've read 5 of the 6 bellhousing bolts are the same but the 6th one is in a slightly different position. It seems to be acceptable to bolt it up with 5 bolts. You'll also need to get a special flexplate to suit the application which I think ATI (US company) make one.

Its a GQ shorty with a VN/VP 5 litre, considering dropping in another block.
All holden 5ltrs use the chev turbo pattern after about the end of WB/VK so will bolt to a chev bellhousing. I think the later chevs LS1 etc are slightly different, engine mounts are different but brackets are easily available.

Close. Some WB were Chev Pattern as were some HQ,J,X and Z and some VB and VC commodores, basicaly if it had a Turbo 350/400 it was chev pattern. From the VN onward the holden 5ltr or 4.9ltr if you want to get technical are the same bolt pattern as the early chev V8/V6 But as soon as Chev went with the alloy block LS1 the bolt pattern changed as Bru posted above.
The engine mounts between any Holden motor and chev motor are totally different and will not line up.
Personaly i wouldnt risk running any Turbo box bolted up behind the LS series motor with only 5 bolts. I have seen many Turbo 350/400s break bellhousings with 6 bolts. And have personally had it happen at 100mph+.
Put simply you could easily bolt up a 4 bolt 350 using your adapter but will also need to modify your mounts or purchase a mount kit.
i too have been thinking of upgrading the 5.0L to a gen 3
could i just drill new holes in my 5.0L adapter plate to suit the gen 3?
or is the shape to different?

Not sure Bartso. Ive had very little to do with the LS series. Not even sure why they changed the pattern. It may be possible to drill the block to suit your current pattern?

Yes ATI should have a flexplate to suit. As for the unaligned bolt hole in the belhousing its as simple as getting it filled and redrilled. Cheap, effective and no f***ing around

when you say getting it filled how far out is the bolt hole does it go over half of it or something?

Getting the block re-drilled or the bellhousing?
Bellhousing. All depends if the bellhousing can be welded or not. If it can then simple, if not you may have to do it to the block.
I can't say how far out the hole(s) are personally as I've never compared them.
The above solution is what we done to our old powerglide when we changed from one SBC to another. There was a slight difference between the two blocks.

I thought the only difference was that the gen3 had an extra bolt at the top in the centre. Still turbo pattern.
When bolting up a turbo350/400/700 the main problem was the converter spacing is different. You need to space the flex plate out towards the gearbox. I think GM performance sell a spacer for this from memory

OK so it will but from what some have said it will bolt on but the new LS pattern has an extra bolt in the top Which you wouldnt have to run i would assume.

yes it is correct. Dellow Automotive do the ls1 kit for $650
Ok so why buy the kit when it is only 1 bolt missing? I take it it is only 1 bolt more then the bell on the 700 has all up.
And the torque converter spacing is a buy of the shelf spacer from Eagle
I might be completely wrong here, but I thought Qserv/CAL415 and Lokka were trying to mate the LS1 to a T700 but it wouldn't go because the flywheel/flexplates were bigger on the Ls1 meaning that it wouldn't fit the bellhousing and if a smaller flex plate was used then the starter wouldn't mesh.
I dunno, they were lead to believe whatever it was would workwith the exception of the 1 bolt, but it was a lot more than this.
