Hi there,

Contrary to what you are led to beleive, there is no one selling genuine Titan Solenoids in Australia currently. I created the brand name, registered the company name and started importing them a few years ago. I stopped importing and selling them about a year ago because I just didn't have the time to do it anymore and there were a few knock offs being sold as Titans that were failing on people and causing serious dramas, so I canned it.

There are people in the industry advertising Titan Solenoids, these are not the genuine article that gave Titan its trusted name and I guess "made them famous", which we forged by using our solenoids in a large amount of comp trucks and really testing them to their limits.

Those advertising Titan Solenoids currently are not buying them from me so I have no idea what they are selling you or if they are of decent quality, so be careful of who you buy from and what you are getting for your $$. I have heard some real horror stories over the last couple of years. Along with that they're leaving themselves open to legal consequences by advertising under my registered company name if something ever does eventuate.

If you want the best quality unit, look for Albright solenoids, they are about the only ones worth spending your $$ on these days, I don't know who sells them now but someone on Outers would probably know. They are significantly more expensive than the other rubbish people are pedalling, but they are by a mile the best.

Cheers, Paul

Hi Paul - you may recall we bought stock off you prior to OBC in May as I had to swap a few for Simmo before he competed. I still had some of that stock left and since this posting my own guys here have volunteered to buy them. Agreed yours were the best but still very hard to sell at $200+

Having said that - the cheaper ones - and the Titan ones - both had trouble either not turning off or starting on their own. We are about to post cut off switches to everyone who bought a solenoid from us in the past 12 months regardless of brand. It's not a fingure pointing session - the rate of error is about 1 unit in 25 which is not catastrophic but precautionary measures are due. Got the cut off switches and the list - just juggling this task with XMas craziness.

This is the single biggest problem with solid state switching devices - IF they fail, they often fail "closed".

I wonder how much comes down to overheating? Are these things rated for continuous operation stand-alone, or do they need to be mounted on a heatsink of a certain (minimum) capacity? If they require specific heatsinking, I can imagine that some installations would be inadequate.

aren't 'titan' style winch packs still a solenoid controlled switch, just that they have the cross shorting built into the contacts? as opposed to running for single pole solenoids

solenoids

Post by Hobzee »

Yep they are all still a solenoid and there is nothing "solid state" about them.

They pull 2 Amps to operate - no variation between brands - and they get hot if run continuously - we trialled a unit for joining batteries together to winch through but they got hot after about 5 mins.

Having said that it's not the heat that causes problems. Problems happen even when stone cold. Nor would it be a problem as it only pulls a current and warms up when the winch motor is going.

But all things considering - the conventional Warn solenoids failed us continuously and the winch would not work at all. These units will always allow the winch to work and is by far the lesser of the 2 evils, given you can shut the winch down when you dont want it to work.

And let's not forget the problems are about 1 in 25 and does not seem to be brand specific and so we shouldn't just assume all is bad. Pretty good actually, all things considering.

 My apologies.

Was someone marketing solid state switchgear for winches? Or did I just dream it all... :?

i think the only true solid state on the market is the Warn 9.5si MOSFET, some ebay sellers have previously called 'titan style' solenoids solid state because they look like a solid state device.
As for the OP i think anything that hobzee sells is a good thing, ive bought ebay stuff off him and its all good.

Thanks for that - yes the Warn unit is the biggest and the best and most expensive by a mile - my buy price is about $600 ea and that's at cost. It comes standard with the Warn 9000 XDC low mount.

I was having a look at Adam Obrien's 4 x solenoid warn replica - only the solenoids were 200Amp extra large joffers. That was around the $400-$500 mark and pretty impressive.

warn

Troy here at work snaffled one of the Warn units when I had a weak moment and so I shall send him on an official winching mission and get him to report back.

Off you go Troy ... Dont come back until you have results..

For the record - Troy volunteered to be my "He Bitch" for setting up Cliffhanger 09. Me thinks that's a Warn solenoid very well spent.

Ive been running one of tigerz11's solenoid packs with the remote control for 6 months now. It works great. Love the remote. Being smaller than the ramsay pack I was able to mount it inside my bullbar instead of ontop where it kept snapping off. Worked out to be the same price as having my old solenoid box remounted to the bar.
