MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYBODY!
I have a HJ47 that's had a noisy gearbox for a while, I just jumped underneath to check the oil levels before I drive off down the coast. the T/F case oil was low and the gearbox oil was overflowing. I hear this is a common problem from the seal between the two giving up and the pressure differences between the 2 cases pushing oil about.
I undid the bottom plug of the T/F case a little and some chunks of metal came out
I have self diagnosed the problem as the transfer case main bearing as it's noisy in neutral but not with the clutch in.
The gearbox changes perfectly and the transfer changes fine too.
So i figure i pretty much need to rebuild or replace the thing before it gives up on me in the middle of nowhere.
I'm just weighing up my options as i have never done any thing much major to a gearbox before.
I have a h55f with T/case attached to an old hj60 wreck with 350k on the clock, and could swap this over but i would need to adjust shaft lengths and I would no longer have a handbrake unless I took the rear drums off the 60 too....turning into a bit of a job and would take an incompetent like me about a solid week of scratching my head and frustration. But I would eventually get it done. And end up with a 5 speed out of a car that I remember to have a slightly shaky 3rd gear. COST: $Free
I could buy a rebuild kit for the transfer and struggle through that though I would probably get some sort of satisfaction from completing it. How difficult is this? From someone who has done it. COST: about $300
I could buy a second hand transfer for approx $400 and not have any guarantee of quiality.
Any suggestions from those with the grey hairs of experience?

40 series Transfer case problem
At first I thought it was a sea anemone, upon closer inspection I realised it was a funky ball of tits from outer space.
Buy a book and have a go at the transfer youself if you mechanicaly minded you shouldent have a problem the only things to be carefull with is lining up the hi/low range lever in the case and make sure your check the input gear on the transfer and the output shaft for wear.
If you get stuck shoot me a pm with your questions....
5 speed conversion would be good to.
