Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Hi all sorry for a long winded post but I need help so here goes

I'm from SA doing a trip around WA and need some help! Ive just gotten back from a trip around the south west coast and after some over heating dramas have found a nasty leak. I've got a turboed 2H 1989 HJ75 Troopy which has developed a leak from the water line that goes from the back of the turbo back into the block. I was wondering if anyone here would know somewhere north of Perth(I'm staying out at Kinross near Joondalup atm) that would be able to make me up a custom braided line asap as its not an off the shelf jobbie???

Also need help trying to solve a strange overheating problem. First off before I left for WA I redid the the whole cooling system. New radiator and flush, new thermosat and housings, new hoses and belts etc. Now its still over heating but in strange ways!

It is ok when cruising along at 90 -100 kms, still gets a bit warm on big hills etc which is to be expected for an old bus I guess, but on flat highways etc after cruising for extended times its not too bad, sits on about a 1/3 on the gauge, BUT when slowing down again say coming through towns and have to slow down to 60 the gauge goes right up to the red, then once cruising again it takes a while to come down but does come down. After doing this several times in a row it stays very hot for quite a while.

Its got me stumped, until I got back it wasnt using hardly any water, occasionaly pushing some back into the overflow bottle and out. Its also developed a miss on idle and seems down on power a bit. It has been pretty bloody hot over here but have not been pushing her at all just cruising along. Seems to go like a train in the cooler weather though.

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated as I need to leave for home (Adelaide) next Monday and have my 7yo daughter in tow and i dont wanna be stuck out on the Nullarbor with her

Feel free to dicard this info as i'm not qualified to comment but driving home to brissy from perth last year my HZJ had similar symptoms with the getting hot while slowing down but doing fine when traveling along. Mine turned out to be a sticky thermostat only partially opening. But from what little i know:

The miss at idle and pressurising the water bottle could be a crack of some kind ie head or bore. If so maybe a pressure test and check the oil for milkshake like appearance? and if it is don't forget chemiweld for a tempory fix/bodge (someone's gunna flame me for that one )

Could also be related to the clutch fan (if yours has one?), i have heard of various ways to checking these and no two ways agree but (i changed mine when mine was overheating and ended up being a $460 waste of time) I can tell you they should spin with the motor shut down but you should feel some resistance.

Sorry dude but for now thats all i got but i'll wander out and check with the fitters (i'm at work) and see if they can shed any more light.

I'm no mechanic either, but my 2H was getting hot on hills. Replaced the fan clutch (easy job) and the needle does rise on hills, but not towards the red as it previously did.

Ok cheers guys forgot to add I redid the clutch fan as well before leaving...

Also the oil is fine in colour, no discolouration but has been using a bit more than normal and no oil in coolant either. Will grab some chemiweld as a last resort for the trip home next week.

I dont want to say it, but it sounds like a cracked head.

Just wondering when you say you redid the fan hub have you added extra fluid to your old one or bought a replacement, like a lot of other people I have opend up one of these hubs on a couple of previous cars and topped them up but never had good results, I never got more than a few months before fan was spinning freely again!

http://www.hosemart.com.au/ they should be able to sort out your braided hose line. They are in Wangara, approx 10kms from Kinross (my suburb too), make sure you call them before you go, as they may want the old hose to copy from. Not sure how mobile you are if the troopy is sick tho!

Once the hose is fixed you should then be able to hopefully diagnose the problem.

Thanks mate! Pulled hose off last night and gave these blokes a ring this morning, just rang someone to come get me they reckon they can make it in about an hour! Will hopefully get it back on this arvo and up and running!

Am REALLY hoping its not the head but after doing more research its not looking good . If it is its gonna have to be chemiweld it and hopefully it will get me home! Have run out of time and more importantly money now so its looking like my only option

Only susggestion would be if it looks dodgy and you HAVE to drive it back to SA make sure you have got RAC/breakdown cover for the journey.

May also pay to plan your route and travel times and either fone police station or road houses ahead, that way if you dont get to each stage they may be able to find you more quickly.

Also keep tuned to Channel 40 so you can ask for help from the truckies!
