Mud Tyre Advice pls

My tyres are fairly worn so Im looking at getting a new set. They are only 32's but its still alot of money so I dont want to waste it.

I have looked at the usual, stt's, mtz's bighorns etc and they all seem to be around the $350 + (well the bighorns are cheaper)

Then I did some hunting and found, federal muddies and toyo open countys etc.

The fedrals are $220 a tyre which is alot less then the coopers and mickys and even the bighorns.

Question is, are they complete crap????

And are there any other cheaper brands out there that I dont know about.

I like the side lugs cos I have bead locks so when I drop them to 10psi they help make up for the massive amounts of ifs flex :roll:

True unfortunately, when they were operating they topped out at 32".... apparently getting larger carcasses to retread was a major challenge
( usual disclaimers )

It seemed like a much better idea when I started it than it does now.

33's was their biggest. Were looking at 35's, but no carcasses.

No they are not crap! My brother runs them on his landcruiser. They have been an awesome tyre off-road. Even on-road they are fine, grip well, and are no noiser than any other muddie.

STT is really just an all-terrain, and in my opinion crap. I have seen the federal couragias out-perform them easily on club trips.

Another cheap brand is Silverstone. Im running the Xtreme model on my Sierra, which are even better again off-road, but crap on-road (not so much grip-wise, but they sound like your flying a small propellor plane or something).
They have some less aggressive models, http://www.silverstone.com.my/ and they are pretty well priced.

Love my Federals - surprisingly good on the black stuff and excellent off road
I wish my lawn was EMO, then it would cut itself...

I only paid $185 for my 31" Federals.
Very happy with them so far, but I have only had them a few months.

i would suggest low km usage especially if your running them as full time tyres on the work rig... i would invisage half the kms of MTZ whilst MTZ being only 1/3 more $$... maths to me adds up for the MTZ and has done so the last few sets. :armsup:

bought 15x 31 bighorns today for $190 fitted
was told that 33's were only $10 dearer
maxxis has then on special till the end of Jan
85 high roof 1.3, 6.5 tc, air lockers,ruf and 34 swampers. yep its an ugly pos.

Loved my bighorns, and will definstly buy again. Payed $210 a corner for 33's and was qouted $250 for 35's.

Bought mine from the big tyre group at lawnton
92' Mav. seat covers, air freshner, floor mats, half eaten sandwich..........

The xtreme 33x10.5 measures a neat 31" and is brilliant offroad, but gives aural pleasures on road.
The sports version has less sizes but an equally capable rubber profile.

i have super swampers Q78's on bead lock rims and they are magic when you let them down to 10psi... i couldnt be any happier!

I have the MTZ's and im loving them so far. ill defiantly buy another set. My mate has the big horns and he rates them really well. My boss has the Cooper STT and he absolutely hates them. He wants his MTZ's back.

I rate the MT117 very highly.

If they were available in a 37" I would have bought them over the Creepies. I ran them at 15psi off road and they were superb.

Have not tried the latest version, but was very happy with mine when I had them. Good off road traction and good on road, and they lasted many years.
On a Zook which is very kind on tyres.

I had some of the silverstone muddies as well in a 32. They were good.

The only thing I will say is that compared to the goodyear wranglers I got after them, they wore down a lot faster on the road.

Another option is the Kuhmo KL71's, I'm about to get a set.. they're a fair bit cheaper than the big brands, but still pretty good from reports I've seen.
