hydro steer pump

Post by HIGH ROLLER »

Gotta replace my steer pump on my buggy running full hydro do i buy a falcon/com pump and modify or get a howe pump apparently rated at 1450psi? think they retail for about $550 aud.
currently running a hilux steer pump with my own mods but think i could do alot better as i still have trouble steering if i'am hard up against a rock etc.
Any help from the hydro gurus would be appreciated
thanks Ben

From my understanding nearly all pumps are similar in construction saying that you should be able to get what you need of your hilux pump. I have played around with these pumps with all types of mods but it is the combination of mods that make for a fast acting pump (key info suppyed by 1 Madengineer) I'm hard up to explane how to get it to work but if your keen to send me part of your pump I'll mod it for you to try before you go spending heaps on a new pump. I'm keen to know if the mods I have done are not a fluke.

Thank's chad

yeh i have read some of the info 1 mad has posted on hear and other forums, think i may of f#*ked it by drilling out the valve, that was my only concern so i thought i would have to buy new parts for it anyway. Thats why i was thinking of starting with another thought the valve would cost me the same as a pump of a wrecked car.
What are your thoughts? I appreciate the offer though, but i also would like to know i bit more about them as i like to be able to do shit myself so if it stuffs up i know where to look. I like to play around doin that sort of thing gives me something to do after work ;) If i cant sort it might take you up on the offer though.

Cheers Ben

I had a falcon pump with a few mods in mine and I shagged it(shock loaded it and lost all pressure) at mud bulls So I thew a wecker stock falcon pump in worth 50$, out of a EA. I can still put my wheel against a rock a either push the rock or the car sidways. That is with a 2" ram.

Got the spring out of a box of compression springs from work just looked for a slightly heavier one and from memory about 5mm longer.

I haven't fully documented the mods but i have mine for reference.
What you are after is pressure and thats the key to it all after all other mods.
In my lux I went from a steering setup that had no feel and was very slow to react to a setup that is lighter, faster and has better feeling than my daily driver. I'm very happy with the steering now.

may pay to put a wanted up for the lux pump. you are best off sorting the lux pump out than going and mounting a new pump that will not offer what you can get out of the lux pump.

offer still stands

are you running a single ended ram hydro assist? If so that would explane a difference in steering left to right if not :? stuffed box! maybe

Im not sure on pressures but the commodore pump is apparently just a bit beefier than the toyota pumps

the hydro assist funds dried up when i blew up my auto gbox.

I have found that aswell. It seems that the steering box seems to push better than it pulls.

I've been running a ford tear drop pump for a few comps now and find it shits over the toyota one. I couldn't keep the front seal from blowing out on a stock toyota 3rz pump.

I'd recomend a ford pump.
