TB45

Post by WICKED »

Looking into GU TB45 for a DD and too tow the MQ round.

Are they a good realiable motor?
What km's do they get?
Do they handle gas well (Better fuel econemy)?
How common are the Manual's?
What's better Manual or auto?

I did a search didn't come up with much.

everyone has different opinions on "FAWK THIS ENGINE GOES GREAT - NONE BETTER"..

Example, some people say 2.8 GU's will pass space shuttles grabbin 3rd while chirpin 44's with 2.1 diff ratios, others wouldnt waste a match on them. Its all up to expectation.
Pete the one I was talkin bout, his words were 'it goes ok'... not fawkin rocket ship (but raptorthumpers, now that was    )

IMWO, go find someone with one, or a car yard, and drive it yourself.

We have a GU 4.5 wagon for towing the GQ , Last weekend to Tuff tracks
we got 26 litres to 100klm .

Towing the GQ (3T plus spares and fully loaded with camping gear and tandem trailer) could get 100kh sometimes up to 115.

Slow through cunninghams gap range 35kh then gets hot.
Our 3.5lt Mazda 3500 diesel truck would smoke the GU on the range pulling 65kh but run out of speed at 105-110kh and the truck has better brakes.

Ben Your truck would have heaps more poke than a GU 4.5

I personally see the TB45 as a bit of a nasty compromise; it's really just a TB42 without any new tech and just a bit more capacity, whereas a TB48 is a substantial improvement in overall engine technology ie more valves etc.

I kinda feel it is worth holding out for a 4.8 litre instead.
This is not legal advice.

I think standard they are underpowered, and the Auto's hate towing (the Auto's are geared too high. 3.9:1 diffs and top gear of 0.694:1). Manual's are better at towing as you have 5 closer ratio's and 5th 0.85:1 is much lower overall than 4th in the Auto. Towing anything substantial they wont hold 4th OD.

All i can suggest, is that if you want performance then add a Turbo, and you have a truck that will make you happy but modifying engines is not for everyone.
