Turboing a 3rzfe and a 1fzfe

Post by Willy Hilux »

Same question for both motors. Is there a chance of turboing these motors without changing the computer or adding a piggy back ecu?
Maybe only having around 6 PSI boost. Or is it not worth the effort??

1fzfe is from a 105 series not 80 series.

some guys in the u.s have had some success with the 3rz and putting the maf sensor right infront of the throttle, it doesnt work behind the turbo, i know ive tried, it stalls on decel and fuel is nowhere near good enough for reliability, i have a haltech e6x fully pre wired for a 3rz if your keen.

I wouldnt bother with either, 6psi is a big improvement but it will drive far from smooth, i work on a 4 banger roughly 8kw per psi of boost.

For all the other stuff thjat is going to cost money, do it properly or it will cause problems, for starters the stock 3rz injectors arent big enough for any more than 6psi, although rx7 injectors bolt in there place and are good for more boost than youd need in a 4x4.

toymods is your biggest friend for info like this, dedicated threads for the very same questions you are asking. has been done several times with the 3rz, everyaftermarket part you can think of is available for both, 1fz in dubai, and 3rz in the us

Cant give you any info on the 1FZE but on the 3rz toymods.com/forum is a great place to start. A couple of guys on there have fitted turbo's to their 2wd Hilux's.
1 guy said he put a small turbo on his, no after maket comp or injectors but you cant run any more than 5psi I think it said..

Others on there have said that after market comp like Haltec or the like with 8psi to 20psi. Decompressing the motor first, bigger or more injectors etc..

have a read on there plenty of info. I was considering doing it to my hilux but cost for what I wanted was about 6k.. Mike Vine Turbo's quoted me 11k to do it drive in drive out, my ute is not worth much more than that!!!

Dont bother without computer on 1fz - fe, as you need to be able to run more timing down low, and less up high, and to try even at 5 psi boost isnt worth it, when with a puiggy back you can go to 10 psi [as long as head hasnt been machined any time] and get better economy and more performance.

Fair to say without computer your looking at a safe 150 rw kw and with computer 220 rw kw or more.

Computer allows much more low down torque, without detonation up high.

They are a great thing when done right, I am currently running a microtech to control spark/timing, and its running with the factory auto to control the auto, sort of piggy backed on my 1fz 80 with supercharger [had a turbo one previously as well] , but we normally use an XEDE these days to do what we need wheen doing supercharged V8 100's or tuning a Toyota engine with exhaust etc.
