Post by Jacked »

looking to buy a new toy to play with over the coming months.

found a 63 scout at a pretty cheep price and was wondering if anyone has any experience with these!

how do they perfor off road and are there parts interchangeable with other makes models?

engine conversions, diffs, box's and transfers etc etc

any information would be helpfull as i dont think iv even seen one in the flesh!!!

Not many of them left now.. Getting parts won't be easy unless you can find a US source. Pre 65 were all 4 cylinder .. 152cubes.
Remember it is almost 50 years old so if you start giving it some curry off road whatever isn't already shagged will be soon.
Dunno about parts interchangeability but I'm pretty sure they run Dana 27 diffs.

This might help too. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internatio ... _Scout_800

If it were my choice between a Scout and anything else that cost up to $5K I'd prob go a GQ pootrol.

the vast majority of drive line is Jeep

Dana axles, dana 20 or dana 300 transfer case etc

The engines were not AMC but so they can be a bit harder, if your resourceful they were a good strong 4x4 and IMHO a great style but that is very subjective

my old man had on in PNG for years and loved, but that was 30 years ago, I would have there would be better play toys, but if you want something a bit different they are prolly not a bad option provided you are able to fix stuff yourself

not sure, but divorced would most likely be esier, run a small jack shaft from the back of the t700 into the transfer. that would be probably the rigt side front output on the transfer for you dana diffs, but there are other diff options, I say mog coz portals are  factory locked, heaps of clearence under the diff and geared down and built to drive a truck on 44s

Poo being the operative word! I'd love a Scout, always been a HUGE fan of the old Scouts and early Broncos, absolute classics.

If I ever have the spare cash (more so the patient wife) I'll get one.
Apparently people think I'm too patronising (that means I treat them like they’re stupid).

An old neighbour of mine had 3 of these I think they were all 65 models. He had two for spares and one as his daily driver, it was fitted with an XY falcon 6 cylinder engine, he'd also changed the gearbox and t/case as well but I can't remember what they were out of.

Use to go wheelin with a mate that had the old scout ute. It had the 345 V8 and holley carb. The carb was a pig on inclines and stalled badly (pretty sure he changed it but not certain what to). He ran 33's, but blew his transfercase and was continuelly braking other parts. It started to get too expessive and he sold it back in 99, and bought a mwb cruiser. If you're only using it as a runabout fine, but the age has creeped up on them so expect to replace everything or upgrade to stronger parts if wanting to play offroad! Good luck
