Ha mate if i was looking at towing a big boat like this i think i would opt for either a 4.2l turbo cruiser or patrol. both types have good towing capacity, and would give relatively good fuel economy for what you are doing, i just feel that the larger type of car would do this with more ease than the smaller ones would. just my 2c worth

Landrovers and Range Rovers tow in more comfort (and safety) than anything else of similar size.
Both diesel and petrol, but the V8's are better.

get a rover... if you like to push.
patrol or cruiser. newer and bigger motors the better.
but it comes down to budget and how often you do it.
obviously if your fishing heaps and often you would see other blokes at the ramps.. what are they using?

Would stay away from the Landrovers if possible. I have an uncle who has a Disco with a Phoenix caravan (big & heavy) and he is constantly cooking the auto when touring.
Unless you needed the 4WD capability I have a mate that has an older F350 and it does the job easily. He drags around huge plate alloy boats all the time and you barely know they are there. But any of the F-Series would be fine, but go the largest one possible. Depending on the model and if you want to modify it you can also convert to/get in 4WD.
There is also the option of a light truck, but a good F-truck or a Chev C60 or something maybe? At lest with these if you want heaps more power there is heap of conversion kits for BBlock and monster autos/manuals.

D40 Navara, 2.5L TD. Rated for more towball downforce AND rated to tow more than a patrol, still comfy. Or a new TDV8 'cruiser ute, not real comfy but more pull than a 15 year old. wouldn't bother with the $100K 200 series.
The new common rail 3 litre in the patrol is not bad. the auto would be nice aswell. The new ones arent blowing up, like the frist generation ZD30's.
Cheers

only the 3.0L auto patrol is rated for less towing than the D40 at 2500kg, all 3.0L man patrol are rated for 3200kg (200 more than best D40 capacity) with the 4.8L patrol are still rated for 3500kg.
