Never found anyone happy with the 2.4TD..
Mine was sweet till guess what the head blew..(not working hard)
Seams to be a very common problem..
Just a motor that Toyota should never have made...

The only Toyota motor I have ever had a problem with out of 10 cars was the 2.4TD all the rest in my expereance are bullet proof...
So yes turbo your 2L, if you want...
Just wouldn't go near the 2.4TD....

well the 2L-T is a 2.4TD as is the 2L-TE. i've had no problem with mine (2L-T) but i haven't run it that hard or had it that long. but yes, there are stories and reports about them cracking heads and what not. however. as stated, they are an old engine. there are things you can do to remedy the situation. ie install an aftermarket temp guage (or fix/rectify the stock guage), install a bigger radiator, bonnet scoop or likewise. remove the egr (if it has one), and run the turbo leaner so that less fuel is put in. yes, this does result in less power, but for when your just cruising, do you really need it? so if you take precautions you shouldn't crack your head. however, really mr. toyota should have built a stronger engine, but he didn't. so all i'm saying is; work with what you've got. or alternatively; bail on it and get a 3L or 5L.
There seems to be a direct link between poor maintenance on grey imported vehicles whilst in japan, and unfortunately it can be a bit luck of the draw! Yes, the 2L-T may be particulary notorious for overheating a cooking, poor maintenance on any vehicle will arrive at the same result.
Good quality coolant (preferably toyota red), aftermarket temp gauge and a thorough cooling system check is the first thing you'd do if you had a 2L-T motored Surf
