You should have a bleed screw on the lift pump is its a TD42 engine, RD28T and ZD30's done have it

it takes quite a few pumps to get it to come up

if you don't have the plastic screw on the lift pump do what my mate does and take the fuel line off that leads to the Injector pump and pump it up till it comes out there, connect it back up and start the engine,

It is proberly not sealing on the filter O-ring and sucking air instead of pulling fuel through the filter.

ok, so i've tried everything but i think i've realised what it is: the plastic water sensor fitting that screws onto the bottom of the filter has a small hole in the side. when i unscrewed the water sensor, there was zero diesel in the filter. when i put my finger over the small hole on the side of the sensor and pump the lift pump it tries to draw air in. but, i never removed any sort of plug from that. is there supposed to be a plug of some sort in it?

I open the bleed valve and use a compressor to blow air into the fuel tank (using a rag around the gun so tank pressurises) and it seems to work fine.
