whole gearbox moving
whole gearbox moving
I seem to have a slight problem with my gearbox, when i start to take off in 1st gear the whole gearbox will slowly move to the right until the clutch is fully out and then go back to normal. Is it a broken gearbox mount?
Find your gearbox under your car, follow your gear lever if you can't work out which bit it is. Look towards the back end of it and there will be a bit of metal connecting your gearbox to the chassis (or frame rails if you prefer). This is your gearbox mount.
It seems much more likely that it is an engine mount though which are located either side of your engine and connect it to the chassis. Have a friend give your car a bit of a rev while you look at your engine. If it moves more than a couple of inches in any direction, a mount is stuffed.

I got my brother to rev the engine as i watched it this morning but it didnt move to far only an inch or two. Also if the gearbox mount was broken would i be able to move the gearbox with my hand from under the car? I tried to push it and it wouldn't budge so i don't know what to do next. If anyone has any more ideas that would be great, but might just be best to take it to a mechanic.
How do you know the gear box is moving? Just from observing the lever whilst driving or have you jacked it up and had a look for your self?

Its definitely moving as i removed the rubber casing so i can see the gearbox while I'm driving, i think its mainly when i hit some bumps in the road it doesn't seem to handle them very well. It moves at least 3 inches to the right. But the actual gearstick is fine and not moving within the gearbox.
The gearbox is bolted to the engine so if your gearbox is moving I'm still inclined to say that it's an engine mount problem.
I'd be bunging in a couple of new mounts over the weekend and seeing if that fixes it. It's a straightforward job and can be done in a couple of hours.

i would have a look at the trans mount but that will only stop the back of the trany movine left and right or up and down. (cant find an easyier way to discribe it.)
engine mounts will stop rotational movement(most common).
For an engine mount (or any rubber mount) to be broken doesn't mean its in two pieces. Its bugged when it streches too far and can't return to its original spot. This means its not going to hold the engine in place this means its going to lean over under accelaration. Only happening in first means that there is not enough torque in the other gears to make the movement. Put it in lowrange and see if it moves in 1st, 2nd, etc etc. If it moves in most gears then its prob not a gear box issue, just an engine mount.
