Replacing Engine

I'm looking at buying a car which has had the engine replaced. Do you need to have the engine numbers etc changed on the rego papers when you do this? I ask because the rego has just run out, so when I go to get rego, I'm guessing they are going to check all the numbers, and I don't think the guy has had it done. How does it work?

I don't know about NSW, but up here I believe DOT person needs to
confirm the new numbers at the time of registering.

don't forget to run all relevant numbers thru WOVR/revs etc

I could save some heartache!

i wouldn't really stress about it. I've never met a mechanic who checked engine numbers during a pink slip.

Is it the same engine type as original though?

blue slip inspection noteing new engine number

you then go to the rta with it and pay stamp duty etc and your rego

a little dearer than a pink slip and only done at certain places,

jsut make sure you have a recipt for the car when you go to the rta

make him change it first. if he changed an engine on a registered vehicle he should of informed the local authority.

if sold to you unregisterd make sure you get a receipt from where he purchased the engine from or some sort of paper trail to identify it not stolen.

In NSW you just need a receipt for the engine as long as it is the same type. So get the old rego papers signed and a receipt for the engine with the engine number, get a blue slip, go to RTA rego it...

The RTA wont correct the rego papers unless it is blue slipped.

RTA doesnt even record engine numbers AFAIK. They ONLY care about the VIN

QLD does.

I agree with Jacked. From time to time we have to attend our Vic roads office to deal with punters who have brought vehicles in for registering with reported stolen engines.

Most of the time the engines are legit but just haven't been cleared off the system as being recovered.

Just make sure the paper trail is clear.

When I registered mine, the Pricktoads dude told me that the engine number on the RWC didn't match what his computer said. I just told him that was how I bought it, and he updated the computer to match the paperwork. ;)

sometimes they will sneak it through if its only 1 digit out they are hard to read at times. If its a completly different number he did the wrong thing.
