Hi I bought a 1995 2.8D hilux a while ago, didnt notice the white smoke on the test drives but im certainly noticing it now. Its blows the most under heavy accelertion. The car seems to run perfectly and hasnt missed a beat since ive bought it, just blows the white smoke. Ive been keeping an eye on the water/coolant levels and they havent dropped since i bought it. The oil levels could have possibly dropped suggesting its burning oil, although there does seem to be a small oil leak around the sump. Basically i want to know if i should keep driving it or get it checked out and any thoughts on what the issue could be?
white smoke os often caused by retarded timing, which in turn can be caused by a fuel supply restriction (the timing is hydraulically advanced by fuel pressure), so change your fuel filter and se how that goes. if the vehicle has high km, it could be that the lift/advance pump is a bit worn so not supplying adequate advance pressure; drop 250ml of 2 stroke oil in with your next tank of fuel and see if that improves or eliminates the smoke.

i have a 95mod hilux 4x4 and shortly after i bought it i went 4x4, broke my air hose between airbox and engine got water in the engine.. damaged the rings, burnt a shitload of oil ( heaps of white smoke ) and just before i got home the engine seized because of lack of oil.
5000+ for rebuild so be careful.
im no mechanic but sounds simular to what mine was doing so keep checking your oil levels.

Sadly, white smoke is often caused by poor combustion temp.
Often see white smoke if you start a cold diesel without glowing it, or if one plug is not working, you get a few puffs of white smoke till the cyld warms up.
Leaking coolant can also cause white smoke.
As mentioned retarded timing also causes this too.
Oil is usually blue.
Sounds like it could possibly be low compression, thus low combustion temps, and the white smoke.
best bet, do a comp test, then go from there.

White smoke occurs when raw diesel comes through the exhaust completely intact and unburned. Some causes of this include…
Faulty or damaged injectors
Incorrect injection timing (could be a worn timing gear or damaged crankshaft keyway).
Low cylinder compression (eg caused by leaking or broken valves, piston ring sticking, cylinder and/or ring wear, or cylinder glaze)
When white smoke occurs at cold start, and then disappears as the engine warms up, the most common causes are fouling deposits around piston rings and/or cylinder glazing. Use of our Flushing Oil Concentrate and FTC Decarbonizer address these respective problems.

Water entering combustion spaces will also create white smoke. Faulty head gaskets and cracked cylinder heads or blocks are a common cause of water entry, and are often to blame. Unfortunately, expensive mechanical repair is the only proper solution here.
