Paul, is it a custom roll bar or one bought and fitted? I have a eureka off road roll bar which has the mounts already on it what do you have?

Pauly,

Most inertia seat belts come with fitting instructions... with your case though you should also seek the advice of an engineer who can help you with the requirements for your specific bar. with most custom bar work an engineers certificate will be needed to maintain roadworthiness and for safety. you must remember your life will be hanging by the seat belt in the event of any mishap... Making do isnt worth it..

how thick is the bar?
i would be apprehensive if that is all you will have over your head if it isnt too thick.
and see an engineer for sure.
it may need some more fabrication for a strong point to mount the seatbelt onto.

No offence but I find that hard to believe. Apart from the fact it looks like very thin tube, that hole in the first pic looks like the upper mount for an inertia reel seatbelt but the hole should have a crush tube fitted. Going by what I can see in the pic, it doesnt. There should be another hole which I cant see in the pics at the base of that hoop facing the same direction for the reel itself. Then the end of the seatbelt is retained at the floor mount (a threaded hole in the floor on my 40). Not sure if thats what you are showing in the last pic.

i know what your'e saying but i will be adding a crush tube to both sides.

yes the last pic is the threaded hole in the tub, could you explain more or send me a pic regarding the 2nd hole your'e talking about facing the same direction.

roll bar

Post by stock 4runner »

i would take at a guess that the roll bar was approved by dot as a roll bar only but not to mount seat belts to. they will basically approve any thing as long as its not going to come lose in a crash or get in the way

awesome thanks for the drawing. by law... do you have to have the "shoulder" type belts for the front?

or can you have lap sash? i'm guessing shoulder type but no harm in asking hey.

My understanding is that if it came from the factory with a 3 point seatbelt (over the shoulder) then it can only be replaced with the same. To my knowledge, all 40 series cruisers came from the factory with a 3 point.

And as far as the legality with your roll bar. You say it has been approved by DOT. Can you explain how? Do you have a mod plate for it? All I'll say here is, be sure that it is legal as a rollbar AND a seatbelt mount, this is one area not to be skimped on. Not having a go, just my advice.

instead of stuffing around with the seatbelt on the rollbar way. can you fit an ADR approved harness eg; 4 point.......???

to the floor behind front seats.

my understanding of the rules regarding harnesses on the road in QLD is that you can have them fitted but the OME seatbelts must be retained.

retained as in kept in the car, if that is in fact the rule, it means that you cannot REPLACE the original (OME; original manufacturers equipment, i think) seatbelt, but you may install and use harnesses.

nah u have to keep the normal seat belt setup in there for road use and have the harnesses for offroad use.

Its all has to be hooked up as the norm.

Agree with the above. And as far as the crush tube dimensions, I'd really prefer you to speak with an engineer about that. Frankly your roll bar scares me and you're better off getting a professional to advise you. I like my sleep. :D
