[QLD] 2009 CQ Offroad Challenge

Post by LSG948 »

Hey guys, Early November the CQ Offroad Challenge will again be held at Seonnee Park in Rockhampton. Same venue as XWC and Extreme International. Rules and regs, entry fee and confirmation on dates will be posted soon.

For those that don't know this is a 3 car team event with 10 stages on the saturday, 2 sat night and a 2 1/2 hour GPS run on the sunday. Pretty well all stages require winching including the GPS, with lots more technical stages this year.

Even though you don't need a roll cage to compete, this is NOT a soft core comp. Helmets and window nets are compulsory with all tracks as tough or tougher than XWC. It is physically damanding on drivers and especially navigators and requires excellent team dynamics, well prepared cars and a never give up attitude to have any chance of getting on the podium.

This year we are opening nominations up to 20 teams, (60 cars) and we will have a handicap system in place for winches and tyre size.

Nominations will open on the 3rd of August. To confirm your teams entry your nomination must be paid in full.

Camping with hot showers and toilets is available on site or one of the many motels close by. Spectator numbers are generally around the 1200 mark for the weekend.

Contact details for entry and any other information will be posted in the coming weeks.

Cheers Davo

Its good to hear that this event will be running again this year... always an excellent comp and a top weekend, all the competitors are fantastic and me personally have enjoyed every moment the last two years i have entered...

But what ever happened to the good old fashion 'run what you brung and hope you brung enough' and i believe over the last two years that it has been proved that you dont need large tires to win cause the last two years a set of 33inch MTZ's have been in the winning team. And lets not forget about two and a bit last year coming in 2nd place (and absolute awesome effort) and think two cars in their team were running a 33 or less... Wouldn't a rulling like this make the top two teams from last year only more unbeatable?

The handicap is for the people running the bigger tyres and modified winches Josh. So cars that are on 33's and running more standard winches will be more competitve against the bigger teams. The handicap is once off and given at scrutineering. The details are still being worked out but that is the basis of it mate.

Count on another team from Mackay this year. Is this event going to be on the same weekend as Mud, Bulls & Music, which is on the 5th to the 8th of Nov?
After just running a comp in Mackay, I can't wait to see how others are run to better ours for next year.

G'day Brent, Duksey had good things to say about your comp. Great 1st effort mate. Central and North QLD can always do with more comps. While their are some competitors from North QLD who compete in the XWC series and our comp, the more local eg central and north qld comps we can have the better. (Less travelling)

In answer to your question, yes at this stage the comp is on the same weekend as mud bulls. Unfortunatly because of Seonnee Park only being available to us at that time, we are locked in to those dates.

Hey Mosko, Roll cages are NOT mandatory. Pretty well same rules as last year with some minor upgrades to reflect changes in the sport etc. It is MANDATORY for teams to listen to the control channel during the event this year. It always has been but with a full field of 20 teams we nead everyone as well as the event committee to be switched on. Their will be NO second warnings/call ups to stages this year. If you miss your call then YOUR TEAM misses out on points for the stage!

yeah righto mate, and thats a good idea, its going to be a huge field of vehicles! and itll keep the spectators happy with teams rolling through the stages one after another and not time gaps between teams,

Um i think you missed my point, i was saying in the last years comp, the two most consistant and donimating teams have had smallest tired 4wd's in them, actually beating the bigger tired teams... This will only play into their hands really wont it???

Well not really, It will mean that a team of road cars as such (33" tyres, good winches and excellent team work) will have minimum handicap points they should be up near the podium if they can keep it together. I can see where your coming from mate but apart from an outright rule/s discriminating against the top teams, it is up to everyone to step up to the plate and strip you of your title lol.

At the moment the top couple of teams are heads and shoulders above everyone else. Not because they have the best equipment/cars etc but because they can work extremely well together as a team and are very adaptable to every stage. Mainly because of the 4wd experiance in those teams.

As the weekend unfolds you can see the top teams straight away. It only takes one stage or so are they are working together almost seamlessly, where as some of the other teams with not as much experiance or team cohesian are fighting and bikering the entire weekend.

Yeah copy that... i agree with you there in saying that you can have the best car in the world, but without team work its all going to fall down... So everyone get out and start practing, get your rig out and go hit some trails with your navi, not only for the comp but also cause its just plain gool old fun!!

Hey Davo, I agree, the more comps north of Brissy the better. I'll see how next years event goes as far as organising and running second time round, but I would like to maybe do 2 a year up here.

This is going to be a tough choose as 2 of our team members are booked to go to Mud Bulls, as was I. We where looking to compete down there as well.
Are these dates confirmed?

just thought i would add my 2 bobs worth in, think it is good having the penalties or what ever it is on those of us with comp style trucks gives the regular joe more hope. some of those teams with smaller tyres etc have been within winning range every year so this might help them get there, but yeah all the bells and wistles don't help if the team/navi's can't work together, i think that has already been proven. just tossing it up there what about 2 classes pro and novice with seperate class winners then an overall with the penalties for pro's included. with pro class havin 2 or more cars with all the wiz bang stuff. I know it would be a logistical nightmare.

PS i have spare diff centres now. yay no more clunking when i smash bits.

Mosko, it's on the LCMP site as being run that weekend. Doesn't matter, this event will be better any way.

Frome the sounds of things, we will have 3 or 4 teams coming down from Mackay. Bring it on.

Hey guys, Rules and regs etc will be available in June sometime id imagine. Were just finalizing some of the rules. Everything will be for download on the website Cqoffroad.org.au when it is ready. At the moment last years forms are still there if you want some idea.

As for entry fee's that is still being discussed as well. There will be a minor increase at this stage.

Nominations will open on the 3rd of August and must be paid in full to guarantee your teams spot in the 20.

Handicaps are as follows.......

up to 33" tyres no handicap.
every inch over 33 will be a 10 point penalty per inch as written on the side wall. So a 37" will incur 40 points. Given at scrutineering and once off per car not per tyre.

Winches - Air or mechanical etc free spool 30 points
24v at any time 20 points
2 or more winch motors 20 points

So a car with 37" tyres and all the winch mods would incur a once off 120 point penalty. Times this by 3 if all cars in your team have the same mods and your 360 points down.

A stage win is 300 points.

Happy chatting Davo
