Drive line strength and electrics are the main issues. Rear trailing arms need strengthening.

The 2 pinion diff centre is weakest, can be fixed by fitting lockers (which have 4 pinions).

If the above is fixed the axles will break, can be fixed with aftermarket axles.

With stronger axles and larger tyres, cv's will fail (similar strength as stock hilux, nissan), they can be replaced with aftermarket cv's.

Then ring and pinion will fail, can be fixed by fitting nissan or 80 series axles. Alternatively fit hilux rear diff centre and 80 series front centre in the rover housings, with axles from jacmac or rovertracks.

Most people spend money fitting lockers and aftermarket axles for the rover diffs, then it is hard to throw those parts away when it becomes necessary to upgrade the diffs. If you keep tyres 33 or less and don't drive hard then that will be ok.

Early rangies have poor electrical wiring - they don't call Lucas the prince of darkness for nothing. Headlight wiring needs to be upgraded with relays, especially if the wattage of the globes is increased, or the switch will fail due to plastic around the contacts getting hot. No particular issues with water crossings - they are no worse than many others.

The 3.5 carbie V8 is not powerful. But they are long lived and reliable. Diaphrams in carbies and wear of distributor points are most likely to give problems.

Stretching of the timing chain retards the valve timing. Then wear of camshaft lobes.

Hi,

What year is it? Man or auto? They are cheap these days.

Bush and Cooter know their stuff, I just want to give you a slightly different perspective because you haven't said how you really want to use this potential purchase.

I have a 74 2 door that has had a newer (81) body put on it. It has a 350 Chev on gas and a C9 auto with the rsend of a LT 95.

It's quite a civilized daily driver (in my mind), goes interstate sometimes and gets driven as a 4WD. I look after it in 4WD (i.e. it doesn't get thrashed).

Still has stock 10 spline diffs and axles. I have spares but have not broken any 10 spline stuff. Yes I do like surprising the ricers at the lights in the city and it has towed over 5 tonnes.

cheers, DL

Well be patient then and wait for something that already has Maxi / Jac Mac / or Toy axle diff combos. They do come up as wrecks or parts or whole drivers. Be cheaper than converting.

IMHO $900 is a lot for a 74.

Add a zero to that for one with no rust and matching engine number in the mother country. At least!

No rust and engine numbers match
so does that make $900 cheap and $9000 the right price

Maybe $900 here, $9000 in England is what I was saying.

They salt the roads over there so rust free early 2 doors are rare these days.

I agree that it's too much for a 74. It's not like older is better with these things.
