You can get your permits at Rainbow and most places you get a barge to the island. Keep a good eye out for creeks running across the beach, they can be deep and catch you out of not watching what's in front of you. Especially where Eli Creek runs out to the ocean.
Also on the inland tracks around Eurong and Lake MacKenzie, the island buses share some of the tracks the 4wd's do. They can come around a corner real fast leaving you nowhere to go.
We've alsways camped near Eurong, good sheltered places along the beach and not far from shop/food/fuel and for the civilised, flushing toilets...
Don't try to drive up Eli creek, you'll feature in every 4wd forum known to man and don't swerve to miss a wave, it will end badly.

Im here for the sausage!
I prefer to camp north of indian head at a minimum .. ocean lake's got some good sites .. and your near enough to waddy point showers to keep the ladies happy.
Myself and the guys try for yearly camping trips to the cape .. though it appears to be closed at the moment.
Getting north of Indian Head pretty much gets rid of all the back packers / tourists .. and it's just mostly quieter.
As the others said .. driving up the easten beach keep an eye on the map so you kinda know when to expect Eli .. as it will hurt @ speed. Also if it's been raining all the little wash outs that are normally nothing .. can get very deep very quickly.
The easten beach is also a runway in some parts during low tide .. so keep your eye's peeled around settlements for planes landing.. had one land in the middle of our convoy a few years ago.
Other then that .. it's gods country .. enjoy.

You can book a camp site @ waddy point .. which has a dingo fence and toilets / hot showers.
or
You can beach camp in the immediate area and use the toilets showers .. depends on your preference for camping.

"My recomendations are not to go to the Island for a few Years until the beach has been replenished with sand and please don't go in a soft Roader unless you want to damage it! "

131304 for permits takes a bit of time over the phone or in person as mentioned. You will need to know where you want to camp before booking permits.
If you want to be by yourself and have zero concerns about your vehicles reliability the north is the best place to go, waddy point as minimum if you want showers etc.
If you plan on checking out the sights stay south around happy valley so it's not such a long drive to lake wabby, mackenzie, eurong /happy valley/kingfisher resorts, eli creek, central station etc all that tourist stuff, which, if it's your first time i'm sure you'll wanna see.
I reckon you'll be missing the 'serenity' of the place if you stay in a campground but if you have a missus or kids...
Hold onto the paperwork parks and wildlife give you at all times it's invaluable if someone gets hurt or your vehicle breaks down in a remote (for fraser) place. It has all the numbers for everyone on the island in case you need them.
I'm sure like eveyone else you will be hooked. A ranger told me one million people visit every year! Could be BS tho. Absolute magic!!!

I'm not quitting drinking, I'm retiring at the top of my game - sporting comeback likely.
Fenced camping, hot showers n flushing toilets,... Dundaburra, just off the beach, 15/20 mins south of Indian head.. try it you'll like it.. If you want to drive the beach all the way, try to hit the beach at the southern end at 1/2 tide going out. Depending on tide size, might be a little squeezy around fallen trees within abt 5k of barge but if you get round them not much else will stop you... Have fun n don't tell your friends 'cause I don't wantem up here.....
Show me the money..SHOW ME THE MONEY
Agreed! Dundaburra is a great spot. Far enough north to be away from most and has good facilities. A bit away from shops etc, but more often than not, that's a GOOD thing!!sidewayz wrote:we went for our anual trip in feb.
camped at dundaburra. was a good spot. full facilities, close to the beach and pretty central to the whole island.

Not good hearing that, as Dundubara is now off our camp spot list as there are only 5 Traler sites & now 6 trailers coming along (was 4).bigbluemav wrote:Agreed! Dundaburra is a great spot. It certainly looks like one of the best spots
So now we have to find a area behind the dunes that we can all fit & be out of the wind somewhat.
I was there in Feb. 2009

Good Bye Grand Vitara, Hello 100 Series.
If your thinking up off the beach opposite the rangers station with a 6 foot dingo fence / hot showers & toilets that would be Waddy Point.bigbluemav wrote:There's a campsite NEAR Orchid Beach........................can't remember what its called though.

Listed as only 4 Trailer Sites, when I called the EPA the other day they said that all other sites are have bollards So no chance of getting trailer in. Oh well we can always go on the beach, its just more of a concern with kids.CheSter wrote:Have you thought about Waddy Point ? probably harder to get trailers into.. but I'm pretty sure they would have enough sites ?
Showers & Toilets.

Showers & toilets arnt a concern for me & My mrs as we are setup for that, but Dingos are a bit of a concern.
We were there in feb 08 and didnt see one dingo, camped at all the places mentioned above and beach is still the best.
There is no LPG for cars on the island only BBQ bottles. We had to drive 80km extra to rainbow beach and pay the ferry to get 150 litres so we could stay the drive around for 3 more days. My 351 GQ was averaging 50l/100km and i was tring to conserve fuel. You will have a great time its one of the best places to visit in Australia

I have been to Frazer Island on several occasions and never had an issue with dingos. They are quite timid in my experience and keep their distance.
I know of people having food taken by dingos, from unattended camps but that was more due to poor house keeping.
There's a lot to see and do, just go and enjoy.

They weren't threatening at all, if we so much as growled at them they would scamper away...
only try and drive around hook point an hr or so either side of low tide, unless you like salt water... also depends on tide heights, sometimes only bang on low tide. thats if you catch the barge from rainbow.
