I have a Platnium Magellan Meridian, and it works very well with the ext aerial. Has some mapping on it, but plan on buying the Proper stuff soon.
I brought mine of Ebay, it didnt come with the aus basemap but so far hasnt been a real problem. It lists most st's and tracks in aus (only tested the vic ones so far) and most tracks are pretty accurute.
Have used it for finding my way around melb instead of pulling the melways out every 5mins. I paid about $1000 for my whole setup which includes - Platinium GPS, swival base, power cable, 128mb SD card and ext re-radiating aerial.
My brother has a E-trek's (Garmin) which works well but is really designed for hikeing so is abit fiddly to use while driving. But the are around the $250mark so good for bottom end.

Are you happy with that set-up...and can I ask what it cost you (minus the Compaq)...I've got one staring at me on my desk, just asking for a GPS sleeve.

Apparently people think I'm too patronising (that means I treat them like they’re stupid).
I am very happy with my Magellan Pro-Trek Color. Small, light, durable, color, HUGE memory, good on batteries, detailed, water-proof, floats...only lacks some sexual appeal

Computers are for the desk at home. I've tried a few OBC and Vic events with the laptop using OziExplorer and proved to have too many issues. A good GPS with maps is better and easier to use. Try the big screen Magellian unit with the keypad as entering waypoints is quicker BUT remember that in some events that the knarlly tracks are mostly unmapped and wont be on your GPS so my suggestion is something simple with big buttons & big screen (Garmin 128 or 152) and a good map.

Like MYTTUF said after doing a couple of Outback Challenges, Pajero's and Simex Pursuits with good navigational results I'd suggest to stay away from incorporating a laptop with your GPS of choice unless you are just going to use it for touring and have the time to muck around.
Personally I have used a Garmin 128 in all events I have done and had a play with the large color Magellan outside of events and still prefer to use the 128.

Purchased a NAVMAN sleeve from Dick Smith for $800 then three weeks later they dropped to $550. Was not a happy vegemite. However the street mapping works well and I have also used the LPI topomaps and Hema maps and they also work well.
I recently used the Hema maps for a Simpson Desert crossing and it tracked spot on.
