Why 'only' 8mm cable on Warn winch?

Is there any problem with replacing the 8mm winch cable on a warn with 10mm Galvanised lifting cable?

Other than the fact that you wont get as much cable length on there.

Why? because i can get 10mm cable for free. I can possibly get 8mm cable tho, if im totally convinced 10mm is no good.

Also, what is 'aircraft' cable, as mentioned on the winch itself? The cable i can get is actual rated lifting cable, is it not as good?

Will 10mm cable fit in the standard 4x4 snatch blocks?
I have an XD9000 and an M8000. Both have 8mm cable, would the larger winches have thicker cable?

yes it will fit the snatch blocks and yes you can use 10 mm cable . some of the bigger winch's like 10 or 12 thousand pound actually come with 10 mm but the smaller ones use 8 cause its rated high enough and then gets more on. as for lifting cable as long as its rated above 9000 pounds i cant see a problem

It would be rated with a safety factor, like all lifting gear. Maybe 4:1 or more even, i havent got exact specs on me. 4x4 winches are not rated with safety factor, so its hard to compare the 2.

Another Q - What is the standard (if there IS a standard)winch cable length?

need to check the bending radius of the cable your getting

wrapping it around your drum might destroy the cable if it is not rated to that small a radius.

this might mean the difference between 8mm and 10mm.

lifting cable should have a higher rating than aircraft cable.
Id suggest the cable construction may have more bearing on your use of the cable.
whats the construction (strands and pattern) of the 10mm.
aircraft cable is usually a 7/19 construction, ie 7 bundles of 19 strands.
the higher both numbers the more flexable it will be.
powercable for example is 7/1 and is a bastard to work with.

Good point, i hadn't thought of the bundle/strands. I'll have to check it out. The guy i know who can order it will have that info.

But im guessing they use this cable for tiny overhead cranes, so it must be safe to wrap around a rope drum. I shall find out for sure tho!
