Grinding noise in ln106
Hey guys. I was driving along last night, took my foot of the gas and a wierd grinding noise came from the rear end of my Ln106 HiLux. The sound is hard to explain but is similar to a belt slipping, only not as high pitched. The diff has fresh oil in it so it should be fine. It only happened when I was off the gas and went away with my foot on the clutch so I doubt it is a wheel bearing. The only thing that I can think it would be is the uni joint. I had a quick look and there is a bit of free play in it (when turned side to side). Last week there was a noise, similar to a chain being dragged but went away after 100m and I have heard one or two clunks when doing tight turns in the last week. The sound was rotational, so it is on and off really quick. After maybe 5 minutes it want away again. Sorry for the long post, I am just trying to be as descriptive as possible. If it is the uni can I just pack it with grease (it's been a while ive been a bit slack lately) and keep on driving or will it need replacing.
Cheers guys. I was stinging to go for a night run tonight as well.

most likely a uni, i had the same problem. On gas it was fine, off gas squeeling its arse off, foot on clutch rolling went away again.
thought it was the centre bearing, replaced made no difference
then actually pulled the rear section of the tailshaft out to properly inspect, and yeah, was one of the unis on the diff end of the shaft. it only twisted one way properly.
i'd pull the shaft off the diff end first and check unis are moving freely and aren't notchy ,give them a grease, then maybe look into the bearing. as when the center bearing goes it usually makes noise all the time..

Awesome, thanks for that. I just bought a grease gun and some grease and im going to pack the S#@t out of it when I get home. As the noise has only happened twice in the last week im hoping the uni isnt to damaged. Can they come back from the dead or is the uni going to be ruined? I understand it is hard to know without seeing it, but the temptation to go wheeling is pretty strong. Dont know if I should just stay home
scotts auto 1 sell unis for like $23, so its not too expensive if you have to change them.Evski wrote:Awesome, thanks for that. Sweet. Where is this scotts place? I know Im going to have to change it, im just hoping I can get by for a little bit (night run). We all know you can never tell when something WILL let go, and usually it will happen at the worst time. Im just unsure about repairs to uni's, as in the 5 vehicles ive owned ive never had to do one. P.S. those shocks you sold me are nice and soft, my old tough dogs were way to stiff.
Yeah mate, I get what your saying. Oh well looks like the place to start. Thanks for your input guys! What do you reckon though, would you risk it going 4wding. It will be greased up, but will this be enough? What are peoples experiences? Sorry to ask to these questions, it is the only way to learn.
