GU 4.5 on gas OR Gu 4.2

Hi,
My mate is planning to sell his highly modified disco and buy a GU. But fuel economy is his major concern. He thinks GU 4.5 running on gas should save more on fuel than a 4.2 diesel. Is that right? Anyone has experience on 4.5 GU running on gas?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

petrol/gas for sure, as long as you turbo it.

My 4.5 on gas cost the same as a diesel using about 12L/100km.
Crappy range but cheap enough to run around in. Generally very reliable but lack power considering the size of the motor and fuel consumption.
And they are about half the price of a 4.2 diesel! Plenty of coin left for mods

dont buy a car on running cost like that.. oh sure it might cost you 40 bux to fill up.. but when you fill up 3 times a week instead of once or less... depending on how heavy your right boot is..
there is a reason the 4.2diesels are still such a high price.. because its the best engine made pretty much.. in the bible a td42 was rebuilt at 550k kms and it still had the original cross hatches on the bores.. people have turbo'd these engines from na at half a million kms and they just keep going..
4.5's are generally flogged out or even worse soccer mums cars that never get warmed up/serviced.. and has had constant start stop work..

Gooday , it cost me about $4300. This included $300. for exhaust mods so the gas tank would fit. I got $2000. back in 3 days from the Gov. for the rebate. Out of pocket was $2300.

Ok, I just bought a GU ST 4.5 on (mixer)gas running 32"s a run from Geelong to Black Rock (VIC) and back was 176 ks. 80% hwy 20%city (not taking it easy in the city either). I averaged 19.4ltrs per 100ks. Sounds allot hay, but at 38.9c a ltr it only cost me $13.30 and i think that pretty bloody good.
Hope this helps.

I get 5.5km/litre. Mine is 4.5 still petrol. The problem is they are a big heavy car with a big lazy motor. The fuel economy goes out the door when getting the thing moving. On a long trip keeping speed constant i get about 6-7km/litre. I am keen to fit a wide band air fuel ratio metre to see a/f ratio they are running. Bye changing to sequential ignition, injection & turbo intercooled will improve heaps on a cruise. But giving it to it we all know what that does.
