Where to buy intercooler kit

Post by WelchyGQ »

Looking for a good kit to put on my patrol 4.2 diesel with low mount turbo.

Cant go front mount because it wont fit with the high mount winch.

So looking at either water/air - $$

or a top mount.

Anyone know where i can get a good DIY Kit?

Cheers,

Welchy

Cheaper if you can weld aluminium yourself.

If you can get a w2a cooler etc off a car that came with them standard would be best imo so long as you can keep the water cool, if the truck does alot of off road stuff, heatsoak from not travelling at speed and the motor sometimes working hard would put me off a a2a top mount.

Subaru liberty, i've had no experience with them but i would imagine they wouldnt have the cooling capacity to cope with a diesel motor that is 2 times the capacity.

Can you side mount a 300x300x75 core? beside the winch etc?

the liberty as had been said above, st205 celica which are all based on motors half the size, there could be motors that are bigger that use them stock, have a hunt around.

If you can find a cheap one upgrade the pump to a davies craig etc.

cheap, i've used the ebay a2a cores on 2 of my cars and can vouch they work alot better than you would expect, even sitting there idleing you can feel the difference between the hot end tank to the cold, went into a.r.e (a well known car/truck cooling shop in brisbane), even richard said that for the money they cannot be beaten, unless your chasing every last degree out of them there more than capable.

Righto, as bogged said, a Liberty w/a would do the job fine if you're on a budget, but if you have a bit more to spend i would look at the FrozenBoost intercooler setups.

One of the guys on here has a write up of a DIY on a GQ/GU TD42 turbo with all parts and prices listed.

PWR do a w2a kit that gives you the pumps, coolers, fan and various bits. You will need to make the mounting and plumb the lot up which is quite easy.

Image

The 6"x8", or 6"x10" is recommended, check what price you can get from you local PWR agent.

intercooler

Post by WelchyGQ »

ok so correct me if i am wrong but wouldnt i be better off getting the smaller intercooler?

Is there any benifit to going bigger than the turbo output size?

wont this increse into the intercooler just create a bigger plenum chamber and thus create more lag?

Cheers,

Welchy

Yeah you can work it all out, and yes the intercooler will add some lag but at the end of the day your really after the denser air as that produces more power than hot air.

going for a smaller intercooler may not cool down the charge air enough before it hits the motor.

The basic idea behind a turbo on a motor is this.

NA motors can only work with 14.7PSI of air or 1 bar, all motors have this as the base adding a turbo adds to this base so the end result is a set Volumetric Efficiency (VE) for NA motors.

Adding a turbo will increase the VE of a motor, but the turbo will make charge air hotter, which makes the air less dense so your motor could make less power.

By adding in the intercooler you lower the heat in the charge air making it a bit more denser again as the dense air produces more power than hot air.

There's trade offs but the end result your trying for is to get the motor to 100% VE with the turbo and intercooler.

if that's any help to you.

The smaller one will do, but you will then be limiting yourself down the track when you want more power. There's a few people on here that have ran the smaller coolers only to find them a bottleneck when they went for better turbo's (BB) and higher boost.

Personally i wouldnt waste your time with a Liberty cooler they do sweet fuck all and for the effort and cost well money down the drain.

I reckon you would be surprised if you couldn't fit a small front mount. I know you have the high mount but stuff inside your grill could be moved around and you could fit one of the smaller cores (not 600 but more like a 450).

This will be your best bet...

Otherwise higher in price... 2 options

1. Top Mount.
Top Mount, you will have to modify you bonnet (added cost) also if you have a mount turbo heat from that will get sucked into your intercooler and then it becomes a pointless exercise.

2. Water Air Barrell (PWR)
If your going to use one of these get larger barrell about i think its the 6x10 the 6x8 will be ok but its still a bit small your still going to be looking around 2k once its all plumbed up.

Personally not big fan of the water to air, i have seen air to air setups particularly front mounts be more efficient. Make sure you get a good core and the piping is down well should you go down that path.

I say all this as i looked at all options when inter cooling my GU and speaking with a number of different people air to air particular a front was the most efficient. As many had tried the water to air and had nothing but hassles and top mounts well similar issues. Just another tip when you decide to do it clean your radiator make sure you cooling system is good condition when uping the fuel.
