shaving fuel tanks

Post by stock 4runner »

has any one out there shaved there fuel tanks as mine hang about 4 inchs below the chassie so i can lift them 2 inchs with the body lift . but that still 2 below so was thinking of shaving them and fitting a bash plate so its all flat and solid down there.
heres the best pic i have at the moment

Sorry.

You'll find the tank skin is 3mm thick at best. Shaving is a bad idea. Clearance will be worse than it is even if you did hypothetically "shave" it and fit a bashplate. Can you not take it up higher than the 2 inches you're already planning on lifting it to suit the body lift?

Could always move it to behind the diff and mount it sideways to get it up out of the way, or recess it up into the floorpan at the back if there still wasn't enough clearance

bash plate was gonig to be chassie mounted so would be strong and not contact the tanks at all

were u talking shaving, or cut and shut the fuel tank?
just get a custom one made if its such as issue, or as said, move it behind diff and side to side, custom probably easier.

you wont shave anything worthwhile off a fuel tank...

Custom tank or find something smaller/more compact that'll go in with minimum stuffing around.

go custom, 2mm body, 4mm bottum, no bash gard. Fab it good baffels to act as a stressed member to support the bottum.

Not sure of the ADR's but we made one not that long ago for a bloke with a dual cab Hilux. His original one was rooted and he wanted a bit more capacity but not as much as the off the shelf offerings. We made one out of stainless and all he did was take it (mounted in the car) to a bloke in town who could and did mod plate it. I think the mod plate only cost him about $50 but don't quote me on that.

The onyl thing the guy was looking for was solid construction and rust resistance. A bit of a joke as he didn't pull it out or look at it mid construction etc we just told him what we did and he decided that was OK.

So one thing if rust resistance is an issue to address making it out of black steel would be out so presumably you would have to make it out of zincaneal or like the big guys aluminise the inside when finished or use a product like Kreem that they use on old bike tanks.

ah ok - i just thought there'd be crash testing etc required to prove the tank doesnt randomly explode open when hit on just the right angle etc...

the issue with custom suspension set ups is aftermarket tanks didnt take your new x-member or shock placement into consideration =) haha
