80 Series Diff problems

Post by Wadezz »

Hey all,

I'm having problems with my rear diff. It makes a clunking noise when I
take off, as well when I'm going about 50 or 60 and i just let my foot of
the accelerator it clunks to. i got under and turned the rear tail shaft and
it has way to much back lash in the diff, what could this be and how hard
is to fix. i did get told by a mechanic it could be something to do with
the LSD buthe was unsure without having it pulled apart. The diff is also
only 1 year old i brought it reconditioned but they wont give me warranty on it.

Thanks Wade

Sounds like the collapsable spacer between the pinion bearings has lost tension and created play between the pinion bearings. Not a huge job to repair and if the bearings are ok it can be done without removing the centre. If you are mechanical minded though I would remove the centre and check the condition of all parts and rebuild on a bench prior to re-fitting it.

iv got the diff center out just wondering how to retention the collapsible
spacer. if that is the prob looks like the pinon and crown wheel have play
in the teeth.

Cheers Wade
