Heavy duty roof racks are.

i think you can get them mod plated as roof racks

its not a roll cage its a "ladder rack"

Correct it is not an exo/roll cage it is a ladder rack

or maybe you should just call the RTA and find out exactly what is and isn't legal. Just calling it a roof rack isn't going to cut it if they are illegal

that's right mate just give em a call and find out the requirements and legalities for ladder racks

why the asumption they are illegal anyway? If built properly, ie don't obstruct line of vision or protrude too far from the body work then what's the problem. I never had any dramas wkth my exo on my Sierra even when it went over the pits at RTA to re register it a few times.

Exo cages are considered to be a hazard to the walking public and aren't allowed......

But it seems Ladder racks or heavy duty roof racks etc are fine, go for it and build a ladder rack

About as hazardous as a tow bar, or external mirrors. What about the bull bars with scrub bars running down to the side steps?

There's a million conflicting rta rules, and this is just another example, bend and twist the rules if you can get away with it.

aslong as in the end it gets plated, your not liable yes?? as a heavy duty roof/lader rack, being legal, and needing to be used, is legal with a mod plate, you should still be covered buy insurance yes?

I didn't think you could get a mod plate for a ladder rack??? However roll bars must be approved/plated to be legal. As discussed here (and elsewhere) it seems external cages are not recognised...

However re insurance. Regardless of whether the mod is plated, you need to inform your insurance and they need to note it down and OK it.

Is that because internal roll cages have implications for head room, head injuries and depending on the design also restraint systems where exo cages do not?

Carry a ladder around to make it look the real deal.

I am sure that is the main reason. They want to check that everything that is padded should be, and that their aren't any other design issues.

Also, most states only allow 4-point cages, so they probably want to check that as well.

In Qld you can get more than a 4-point cage plated and legal. Mate has a full integrated cage in his VX (he does track days) and it's plated and fully legal

QLD is one of the few states where you can. WA only allow 6-point if you have class B (rally) rego.

in tas ya can get 6 point. depending on the position of the rear legs, the vehicle may be deemed to be a 2 seater only tho (if it impededs the back seats to much)

Sorry for not being a whizz bang computer/forum expert as you must be, but I'm only human and prone to a stuff up every now and again

i am planing an exo cage, but apart from the bars from bull bar to sliders, and tray to sliders, i am going to figure out a way to make it all bolt on and off, so i can carry most of it, in the tray, then bolt it on when i am going out bush. that way if done correctly i can take it off if i need to run round the street.

I was told by an engineer recently that as long as it follows the lines of the original pannel work it would pass. (NSW)
Maybe try ringing around some engineers.
