hay all should i wrap my gq front diff??? i have 39 tyres on my 40 an i have upgraded to gq diffs. wat would you do and does anyone have any pikks thanks

by wrap do u mean brace the diff housing??? if so then yes i highly recomend it as i have seen numerous GQ front diffs bent from even the basic offroad use. either build the braces yourself or go to www.superiorengineering.com.au and check out there bracing kits. i have one of these fitted to mine and i just welded my mates on about a month ago.

BEWARE,

if you are using the superior diff bracing kit on a patrol diff in a patrol, and you have'nt extended your front bumpstops you will more than likely have clearance issues with the top brace and the sump.
mine hit badly, pusing the sump into the crankshaft/bigend caps.
if you also have front radius arm spacers you will likely have clearance issues with the diff centre guard and the panhard rod.

they won't tell you none of that when you buy the kit from them.

Hey Megatrol,
Did you weld it on with the diff in the car?

I fully stripped mine down and did it on the bench
would'nt reccomend doing it in the vehicle, welding causes scale on the inside which contaminates.
gussets at the knuckles have outer axle seal which would be damaged from heat from welding.
The trick to not warping it is to take your time and limit the amount of heat you put into it, work around the job and not just 1 side at a time.

would it be possible to cut a section out of the brace to avoid it hitting the sump? i am planning on doing this as i think my mate has bent his housing as his tyres are cambering out real bas and i had to weld split welds next to the pumkin on the passangers side up after convincing him quicksteel or silastic wont fix the split :roll: and i cant aford a new housing any time soon :D

yeah you can section the brace but it needs a fair bit off, and then it sort of defeats the purpose.
you could also place the brace under the axle tube, though not ideal either.
I already had a 50mm bodylift , so i ended up lifting the engine and gearbox 50mm. that sorted out other issues aswell as the the lack of clearance at the sump.

All solid axle 4x4's manufactured have a sump that is pressed into shape to accommadate a diff going up under the sump at standard height then when you fitt a diff gusset which will eliminate that clearance you will have to be carefull that the diff might hit the sump. ( also depending on coil rates, accessory weight, what you do , how you drive , if you jump etc etc etc etc )
This is the first i have heard of a diff hitting the sump and pushing it into the mains , but it is possible if you jump your truck without dropping your bumpstop heights.

We have sold hundreds of these kits with no reports of this problem before .
It would take a massive hit to push a sump into the mains.

If you are fitting a brace in above the diff it would be recommended to drop the bump stops or at least check what is going to make contact.

If a vehicle is going to be jumped or similar bumpstops should be dropped to the correct height or the coils and shocks can be damaged not only the sump . This applies if it does or doesn't have a brace fitted.

Radius arm clearance depends on type/brand / size of panhards and diff guards as their are so many different types/ manufacturers out their, it will also depend on compression of your current suspension as some vehicle compress far more than others. This should also be checked as vehicle manufacturers do not design their diffs to be pushed forwards from factory geometry. ;)

It may be the first time you've heard of this happening, but i did ring you guys and tell you and the bloke i spoke to said that it had happened before and he recomended i extend my bumpstops, well that would of been good to know before i bought and fitted theb "kit".
If you sell a product that "could" cause so many problems i think you should make your customers aware of it. pain in the bum :x :bad-words:

i have many other superior products and i am very happy with them :)

Thanks for the input steel, it would have been bought to one of the other sales guys attention and not mine, I have updated the website telling future customers to check the gap between the diff and the sump. ;)

i have not extended my bump stops and my diff is 1'' further foward than standard and i have not net had troubles with the brace hitting the sump or the panhard hitting the pumkin and i have bottomed mine out a few times. but in saying this i have heard of it happening.
