Hey guys ... another question
Ive got some 33"s that I use to playing with, so havent been bothered about speedo correction etc etc. But would like to have a similar sized tyre for road use instead of my 31's. Ive been told my mav runs 3.9 diffs, and am wondering if theres something I could do to correct the gearing or even just the speedo for bigger tyres ?

If your mav runs 31's standard and has 3.9s
then the upgrade to 33's will require 4.1 diff ratios if you want to keep drivability the same (expensive option)
If you're happy with drivability with the 3.9's and the 33's then just get the speedo changed. I think one of the forum members has the information on what speedo teeth to use to have changed on the gearbox to allow for correction of the speedo with the 3.9's using 33's

4.1's are a bloody common gear.. availalbe in nearly every patrol out there.
See if you can find yourself a pair of diffs with 4.1 gears and whack em under rather than fiddling with the cw&p on ya diffs unless you're firm on keeping ya diffs as the cost of the 2nd hand diffs with 4.1 gears will just be about the cost of doin the cw&p conversion from 3.9s to 4.1's
Have a serious think about what you're doing.
Do you plan to lift the truck up further at any stage in the future? will you be goin 35's at some stage?? etc??
Consider those things b4 u fork out your hard earned money??
to go 35's you'd need 4.6 ratios .. more money down the drain if you already spent em on 4.1's.
Why not tel us what your plans are..
Will you do a lift? yes or no?
Will you go 35's ? yes or no?
Or 33's on road and 35's offroad??
Good questions to be answered b4 we all can give you a proper assessment of your situation on what gears to be used as few people i know run 33's using 4.3's and runnin 35's offroad etc.
Different situation for myself as i run factory 4.6's on 36 swampers

You can buy the gear for the speedo that corrects it, around $20 from Nissan. You change the gear at the gearbox end of the speedo
Bazzle knows little more about it, hes done it before.

An alternative way of correcting the speedo for different sized tyres, is to remove the instrument cluster from the dash. Remove clear perspex cover and carefully curl the flexible speedo face forward. Behind this face is a small rectangular (10mm x 10mm) box with a phiilips screwdriver head. Carefully drill a 4mm dia hole though the top of the instrument cluster to access the box. Adjust one way or the other and calibrate with a GPS. Takes a few goes to get it right.......but doesn't cost you anything from Ni$$an.

of if you want something that takes 10 mins first go, instead of hours adn cant bollox it up give nissan $20

Nah, just once bitten... and wanted to help others so that they don't make the same mistake that I did.
Does anyone know how many teeth are on the spur gear on the rear output shaft? I want so work out the speedo spur / pinion ratios more accurately.

As an MK driver ive got 4.6's and 31's... it aint that bad aslong as you dont want a top speed over 125, cruising at 110 is pushing it a little, does 100 in 5th fine tho. 4.6's and 33's would have been fine i thought

I am driving a GU TD42T with 285's and 4.88 ratios (just done a conversion from 2.8 tdi to 4.2 T and haven't changed the ratio's yet). She has some real get up and go but first and second are very short. Revs at 2600 RPM in 5th at 100km/h or 3000rpm at 117km/h. Fuel consumption goes way up when on the highway at 100km/h.
Just to add to info on diff ratios per model... my manual has the supplement for post-Dec 92 Patrols and Mavs and states...
All models have a final drive ratio of 4.111:1 with exceptions:
- Patrol ST & Ti Manuals are 3.9:1
- 3L Models 4.375:1
- Maverick XL 3.9:1 (where my Mav falls)
- 4.2L Autos after Dec 92 3.9:1
- Leaf spring Cab Chassis 4.375:1
And standard 4.111:1 LSD's on:
- Maverick XLT
- Patrol Ti
- Some Patrol ST's
All models have a final drive ratio of 4.111:1 with exceptions:
- Patrol ST & Ti Manuals are 3.9:1
- 3L Models 4.375:1
- Maverick XL 3.9:1 (where my Mav falls)
- 4.2L Autos after Dec 92 3.9:1
