difference between 4.5 & 4.8 auto trans

Post by garth »

gudday

I have had a search with no luck.

Is there a difference between the patrol GU 4.8 and 4.5 auto trans?
How much power do they drain over a 5 speed manual trans?

I wanna build another TD42T(got one sitting around and cant afford a duramax!) and drop it into a later model petrol 4.5 or 4.8 model as they are abundant and cheap over here. - (we havent had 4.2l deisels GU's since 99)

they are all autos hence the question.
any advice welcome.......

regards

considerable difference, when i was looking at setting up a big hp GU the GU 4.5 motor and box are weaker than the later 4.8, From memory AXT (sells kits to arabs mostly) said most autos behind 4.5s fell apart not long after you start pushing 160+rwkw, the 4.8 auto is said to be very good but i couldn't find actual torque figures.

interesting.....4.5 probably got the same box that's in the GQ's then?

did you end up using the 4.8's Tiptronic box in your set-up? if so how did it go ratio wise? (gunna use 33')

Probably go a GU 5 speed manual Box now as I have heard that the 4.8 Auto box aint so good for down hill breaking....and NZ aint the flattest place for towing!
anyone know what they go for second hand in Oz? they are rear as rocking horse sh*t over here.

I didn't bother, I'm keeping the GQ and currently building a new twin cam RB30 hoping to push 350-400 rwkw so I've started collecting the adapters to put a turbo 400 behind it and not waste anymore time destroying clutches and gearboxes.
