Thermostat

Post by GQAndrew »

I believe I have a faulty thermostat on the GQ Diesel. The car struggles to reach operating temperature. I suspected that the thermostat is stuck open, partially at least. Was told to run the car when cold with the cap off and observe the coolant in the radiator, if it is stationary then thermo is closed, otherwise it is open.

From this I can conclude that it must be open, as the radiator coolant was moving, the only thing that confused me here is why there are two hoses coming from the thermo cover. There is the radiator top hose, which I believe carries the coolant back to the radiator when the thermo is open, but there is also a smaller hose called a bleed hose that goes to the radiator neck, well the coolant was flowing back to the radiator via this bleed hose, why is this so, would it flow back via both? I will replace my thermostat tonight anyway, do I need to drain the coolant before hand, or can I just change the thermo then flush radiator and changed coolant in a few weeks when I have more time and money.

Thanks

Andrew

Change tremostat and gasket.
Top up with coolant pre mix 50%.

Flush and refull when youve got the $$$

All done, original thermostat would not close properly, was stuck about 1/2 open. Now car gets up to about 1/3 after 5 minutes, and doesn't move. Will have to wait for some warmer weather to check the efficiency of the cooling again.

Cheers
