Post by harks »

hey guys just got the 3'' exhaust done but with out the dump pipe as the exhaust man told me that it would not make much or any difference?????

is this correct?

also i am thinking of getting the muffler removed, just wondering if it is just unbearably loud? i tow a trailer most days and the exhaust guy thought it might be to loud...
what do you guys think?

when i bought my GU nit had a 3" exhaust with what look like a factory dump pipe, well i removed it and fitted an after market 3" dump pipe,

the one i removed was an MTQ item and it was a 2.5" pipe,
3" felt like it made it a touch more responsive down low,

today i removed the muffler its louder, sounds sweet, but dont think it made any difference power wise,

im a fan, ive never run mufflers on my turbo diesels

exhaust

dump makes a fair improvement, both 3" system and dump should be done at the same time its worth it. i had straight through on my 80 series was quieter than with muffler but neither had much whistle, depends on type of turbo i guess. my 2006 4.2tdi gu straight through was no joke like a kenworth or mack truck whistling away at idle and sounded awesome BUT the more you loaded it up the louder and LOUDER it got you couldnt hear the radio or have a conversation full stop. sounded great, people would hear you coming from way down the road, cars would move outta the way as you flew past. Got annoyed with it and put a straight through hotdog on it quietened it down by half easily can hear radio etc now still sounds great more meatier and alot less deafening at 100kph up a hill. Still has whistle. Although i made my exhaust myself- has 1 90deg, 2 45 deg thats it. straight as i could possibly make it. Bout 7 foot of straight under tray, above chassis. A bought 3" kit with more bends in it would be quieter than mine with no muffler, than mine with a muffler. cheers.

The factory dump pipe is so restrictive its not funny, I would consider it the most important part of upgrading the exhaust on a Patrol!!
