Whats stoping me
Apart from legal crap what is stopping me striping down the front leafs on my hilux down to the main leaf only and replacing the shock with a coil over style shock.... Seam like a fairly simple way to to make the front nice and smooth with lots of travel. Am i missing something???

Don't the Lux's run an antiwrap bar to the top of the diff already?

Re: Whats stoping me
I was going to do this on an old 75 series i had.
I was going to use the Main and Wrap leaf though.
You will still need to mount it properly though, as i don't think the Original Shock mounts, will last trying to carry the weight of the 4WD, and definatly have an anti wrap bar though
In the end the only thing the Leaves are doing is locating the Diff .

Re: Whats stoping me
The front end of a solid axle Lux has an anti wrap device, its called a torque rod, one end mounted at the top of the front diff housing, the other end mounted to the chassis rail.
If you plan to run soft rear spring packs, then youll most likely want something known as a track bar, or ladder bar, or anti wrap bar, Im sure theres other names for them too.
It mounts at the top of the rear diff housing, or somewhere near there, and the other end is usually mounted somewhere under the cab, around the centre bearing area, ish.
As for an anti wrap leaf, I think its a short, thick leaf that runs on the top of the spring pack from the centre pin forward. Im not sure about the fine workings of it but Im sure that Yamaha_308 has run them with success on his Lux, check his build thread for more info.
Hope this helps mate.

I dont see any problem getting a blue plate for it either. It will work well. Have you thought about just adding a coil to keep costs down and not a coil over. Still remove leafs though.

Re: Whats stoping me
As simple as it seems I think you will have a lot of issues with wrap plus diff shudder. Running with just the factory torque assembly which is on the drivers side of housing won't cut the mustard for daily driving. Hence won't pass roady.
You would at the very least need to run trailing arms which defeats the purpose of keeping the main leaf. Easier to run a 3 link which under normal circumstances is difficult to get roady as radius arm is the minimum.
If just using offroad the factory torque arm may work but I can see issues with binding when passenger is lost in a crevis (rocks) & the load produced would have the drivers try & walk forward & leave the passenger in the hole snapping leaf & all sorts of bad things.

Re: Whats stoping me
Iv'e seen the underbelly of a jeep grand cherokee (once) and besides it being a weak monocoque chassis , the front suspension is a four/five link (whatever way you want to look at it) which is somewhat flexible and roadworthy???
Don't take life too seriously...it isn't permanent.

The torque rod stops the front end wrapping which causes bump steer with the hilux "push-pull" steering of a solid axle front end hilux. Being a single link torque rod it still relies on the front half of the leaves to form a triangle (look side on, the leaves and the torque rod form a "triangle") to control wrap, so when you strip down the leaf pack to a single leaf of two it wont really be effective on controlling the axle wrap.

Re: Whats stoping me
apart from the axle wrap, and nothing really preventing side to side movement of the diff housing, and the fact your flex is still limited by the leaf springs... ummm... dunno.
just link it
just link it

Not trying to push a product but I had OME supension on my Lux when I had it and I was very pleased with the ride and travel.

The Hilux's run an anti-wrap bar on the drivers side of the front diff from memory.
Another possible issue might be your coilover tearing your shock mount off due to the extra load placed on it.

Re: Whats stoping me
A mate of mine had coils fitted to the front of his lux in melbourne, just had the one leaf left in and they just turned into a big w after awhile. not sure if it was approved or not but will ask him tomorrow.
Re: Whats stoping me
i know a guy that had a set up in the rear of 351 powered f truck. had big track rods like what leaf spring dragsters use.. have a look at some big hp leaf sprung one tonners and stuff.. he did fink desert race with this set up and had no issues
