My 1989 TD42 GQ is having gearbox problems it does not want to go in to 2nd properly.
It will go in but when you let out the clutch whilst trying to accelerate it will pop out of gear, but it will go in if you let the motor slow the car, once it has gone in it is fine and will stay in even if you put the clutch in and out.
I don't think that it is a syncro issue and it is going in to every other gear fine so i don't think it is clutch i have a feeling it may be a selector issue, i have also dumped the oil and put new oil in too.
Does any one have an idea on what the problem may be or has any one had this problem and know how to fix it.
Cheers Ben.

Your gearbox selector forks will be worn not allowing the syncro dog to fully engage, they can be repaired by removing the top of the box, removing the worn fork and getting it built back up by a machine shop. dunno how the price of a new one compares but last time I done this it was cheaper to get built back up.
while we're on the gearboxes are bastards topic,
mines a shit to get into first at any speed, and not much better stationary, and second grinds as you go to select it, not even through the synchro, just as your going through the gate kinda thing.
running penrite oil and a reccomended additive from local auto store, tempted to go to castrol vmx80, or vmx-m as it takes a beating sometimes... and see if its an better on shifts.
any thoughts or theories?

mate i had the same dramas it was very hard to get into first and reverse would grind every time,i tried different oils and ran a teflon treatment and it didn't solve the problem. i replaced my clutch and then the gear selection was sweet as, it does still jump out of first every now and then, which from what i have read is meant to be worn selector forks or detent spring problem, my gq is going in to get this sorted out on tuesday at the mechanics, will let you guys know what the problem is.waandy wrote:sorry to hijack but i am having trouble getting first gear and reverse, and it is very notchy shifting, stays in gear fine but i hate forcing it into first and grinding it into reverse
cheers
