NH Paj, can only get low range in 1st gear

NH Paj, can only get low range in 1st gear
My Mum has an NH Pajero. Ever since we've had it (just over 2 years) it's never gone into 2nd or any other gear while in low range. It has to be in 1st, and it will go into low range, but as soon as u move it down to go into 2nd, it pulls the transfer case lever out of low range.
Wat would cause that to happen?

Your main gear lever, HAS to ne in neutral, before you try to engage the llwd gear with the transfer case lever, once it has engaged then you just put the main gear lever into drive and off you go, hope this helps.VHPirie wrote:My Mum has an NH Pajero. Thanks guys. It's definitely something inside the box as it's still doing it with the console out and boots removed.
Any idea on wat it could be?

Is it an auto or 5sp ?
If it's an auto I've got no idea as the auto shift lever is remote to the t/case.
If it's a 5sp there could be some sort of fouling between the two shifter rails.
I'd try removing the plate on top of the t/case (that holds the levers in position) and working the levers to see what's going on.
Are the 4x4 dash indicator lights working as they should be ?

Also another thing....which might not mean anything but thought I'd post it up incase. When I go to put it in low range, as I move the TC shifter, the gear selector moves forward as well (not all the way into gear tho). And I think I can get into 3rd with low range as long as I put it in 3rd first then move to low range. Coz yeah if it's in neutral, when moving into low range the shifter moves up, and ya can't put it down enough to go into neutral without low range popping out. I guess 5th would work as well if I put it in 5th gear first.
Will have another looksy 2morrow anyways and get back to ya. Might even get a video of wat it does.

Had a look 2day, pulled both selectors out but it's a bit to technical for me...especially when I can only see through 2 small holes. Might have to take it to a mechanic.
Here's a short vid of wat it does anyways.

You have to take off the gear lever cover to expose the linkages that's the only way you can see what's going on. You can use a thick screwdriver to select the various gears for testing and try to see what's snagging in there.
Both levers are mutually exclusive - there are no interconnecting parts that can foul on each other.
Check underneath the top cover when you remove it as it does have a spring that keeps tension on the gear lever (notice how the gear lever will always centre itself to neutral) perhaps something under the cover is not right and causing some fouling.
Another one to check is the t/case roll stopper mount if it is excessively flogged out there could be enough movement in the whole assembly to cause it to pop out of gear. This has been known to happen.
The roll stopper you can buy from Autobahn for about $50 (Kelpro brand).
Genuine Mitsi is about $100.
