Landcruiser vs Patrol
Hi all i have just got sold my Hilux and i'm looking for a new toy. I am after a tray back Landcruiser or Patrol diesel budget is about 20k.... but have been told 75cruisers arn't best in the bush i am not overly concerned about the ride comfort just more the handling capabilities and given they have leafs how good do they flex up also do the diffs hang a little too low for good clearance? My friends say go coils over leafs anyday and get the Patrol (they all have Patrols) but i do like my Toyota's i am open to suggestions or advise from anyone who can help, and given i just come out of ifs Hilux either one would be better.
Thanks
Thanks
try to go for a 79 series ute over a 75 ,longer cab with heaps more cab space, coil front ,bigger brakes, longer rear leafs (more comfort) bigger axel studs, newer cluster dash, they dont look like much more bigger but sit in both and you will know and you can lye your seat back and they have a little tool box thing in the cab to,, and you easly will get a std 79 series diesel for 20 g
mate stock leaves vs stock coils will never flex as well! but the leaves will take a lot more weight. The flex out of a 75 stocko isnt very good but with abit of spring work they come up ok! I have never had a drama of hitting diffs. And were i have hit everything will hit. Spring perches hang a little low but what can you do! Im running 285x75x16 under mine with stocko spring set up. Havent really had much of a drama with flex. If you lift a wheel just adds to the excitment!

go a GQ ute diesel, you wont be unhappy. they are cheaper and easier to modify... i had both. 2 inch lift for cruiser 1500. 2 inch lift for patrol 600. they are just easier to work with in a modified car way. i love my cruiser, but for a modified play toy that would still see the road a patrol is just better
turbos are nice but i'd rather be blown

Cheers, Dano.
I agree my 79 series is great but well modified a troll ute will be cheaper & easier ...
Unless you want to carry heavy loads & can afford the toyota then the troll will be easier....
I do have a mate with a 75 xtra heavy leafs & honestly he goes everywhere i go but with lockers.... then for lockers your up fo another 3 or 4 grand...
Work out a final budget to what you are going to spend over the first 12 months & go from there..... decisions decisions but when its a new rig do your homework it will be expensive if you heaad down the wrong road..

yeah you do. but remember the 79 series isnt much more than a gu ute. infact at the same time the GQ utes were going, toyota only had 75 series utes and they were the same price. the nissan will take a punishing, can be modified for hundreds not thousands, parts are more readily available, when you scratch a GQ you wont burst into tears, they are just better for modified users.paulm958 wrote:Yep agree on the Patrol, but whats that saying???
you only get what you pay for!! lol
save up for a 79 it will pay for itself in the long run
turbos are nice but i'd rather be blown
But then if want class there is no competition 79 Series RV 1HDFTE.
There are trol utes everywhere modified for 4wding because they are cheaper not better. Both have their purposes, trol probably cheaper to service too but 79 will resale much better & us 79 Series owners would never go back to the troll..
Trust me i had one & love it, more comfy & modern but i like em tough & basic............ that being said mine is an RV and i had to spend a shit load more to get a/c & cruise...... i prefer the look & better vision over the bonet when things get silly..
Keep us up to date with your decision.....

Hey Towie, did you also tell him he would be up for an Engel fridge, as ive heard thats the only way you get real traction out of 79,
oh its gotta have beer and be about a 40 litre,
am i close lol
ps, loved the vid up the hill
Spot on i even load all my camping gear & roof top tent to the back of the tray to help traction the arse is so bloody light with those leafs in it.. mind you twin lockers does help...
Vid your talking about was out at Maytown...... & you must be lovin the mud now...
15K sounds alright & thats a big differnce with the yota the $$$$$$
I know its too expensive but check this sweet ride out http://www.carsales.com.au/all-cars/pri ... es&trecs=5

factory TD patrols are gutless and chew way more juice than the td cruisers and have a lot more over heating problems when under load
True at least with the toyo you dont NEED to modify the engine at all it has plenty of poke straight up std.... however the trol suspension is better in std form....
I blew up the turbo on my trol at just 1500 klms from driving it out of the show room & had not even hooked the boat up to it at that point...

I found that being a tight ass has turned out to be really comfortable on those long highway drives, and offroad the difference in comfort is day and night. Offroad visibility is a lot worse than the 79, but having a rear lsd that actually works (still after 200,000k) really makes up the difference for me. I can put up with the lower quality plastic finish inside if it means i dont have to get out and dig all the time.

thats fair Sam i like it..
Being an RV with tint, aircon, carpet coil front a rear that flexes oh & twin lockers & warn 9000 XD i never have to dig & the winch is for helping others...
I know what you mean though & i like my trucks tough not soft on my bottom... .. mines not close to std & if said std no mods the trol is much better with suspension if you like it soft but it cant carry shit and the rear lsd toyota obviously dont seen to think we need one after all these years the idiots...

True true, with the steel/wood tray on the GU, throwing a swag and a carton of piss on the back is about all the weight it will handle. Whereas you could just about throw the GU on the back of the toyota and still be on your way.
(may be an exaggeration, but certainly seems like it sometimes)

Hey Blinky,
FYI -
Just picked this up for less than $20K (30 000km, dual bat etc etc, its basically new) and im more than happy with it.
I can pass on the details of the yard in WA if you would like. there are still a few there (i think), a mate and i bought one each, both in perfect condition with almost no use. Mine was a clean as the day it rolled out the factory door. It might not be up your alley, but i couldnt go wrong for the price.

yup look at that beautiful & under 20 large thats awsome with 30k..
fantastic starting place as a build up if thats what your going to do..
Mine is multi purpose does all the usual tracks we all have & we use it for touring so we can carry all that we need & go remote for longer periods especially up here in FNQ..
re 70 series comp trucks i agree they are worth much more than a GQ-GU so why would you & how many of you only use your trol for comps etc?? not to many we have been around aust & done a 9 month trip along the east coast you cant do that in single purpose modified troll can you..
So it depends on its use...... mine has multiple personalities a bit like me..

I should say i loved my trol ute & if i could afford two utes...
1. for every purpose & everyday drivabilty it would be a cruiser every time ...
2. But if i could have a second roughy truck as comp truck weekend hack it would be a troll ute as it would not be used for anything else.....
