Landcruiser HJ61 jumps out of 5th gear

Post by simonoz »

Hi everybody,

just bought a 60 series Landcruiser (1986, Turbo Diesel, 5 speed manual, 451.000km).
Now i noticed that it jumps out of the 5th gear. It happens when the car is shaking and i'm not on the gas. :(
Should i try to give it back? Or can it be fixed easy/cheap? Can someone recommend a mechanic in sydney who can fix that?

Kind regards
Simon

alot of the older models do it, the best way is to get a later model box i think they fixed the problem in 88' not 100% sure on that tho may have been 87',

our 86' 12h-t model done it, we rebuilt the box and i didnt fix it, so ended up finding one out of a 85' that dosnt do it yet

So there is no other way to fix it, then to switch the gearbox?
What happens, when i keep on driving like this? Will it get worse or damage anything else? What does a "new" gearbox cost?

Thanks a lot.

Toyota changed the 5th gear selector rod and fork, and probably other stuff too. Any good gearbox repairer will know the details.

Design of fork and the detent positions on rod to allow more positive 5th engagement.

We had a 1/'86 HJ61 from new, which started jumping out of 5th from about 50k km. After several attempts to rectify it these new parts solved the problem.

Of course any excessive wear or endplay should be addressed first.

Ah, so maybe the gearbox can be repaired. Thats good news. :) Do you (or anybody else) know a good gearbox repairer between Sydney and Brisbane? That would be very nice!

My HJ61 Turbo Diesel 1988 version has done 325,000 and has never jumped out of 5th, I would look at trying to buy a second hand 88/89 unit. In some parts of country WA 60 series were crushed for $25 a vehicle. Of course you may have to ring around NSW country wreckers.

Where are you located? Sydney i guess? Unfortunetly i'm not in Sydney anymore. :(
I'm on my way to Bundaberg at the moment and will stay there for a few weeks. So maybe someone in that area has a second hand gearbox he wants to sell?! Or maybe someone knows how to repair it?

g'day

meanwhile i'm in perth, but still have the problem with the fifth gear poping out. Already visited some gearbox specialists and wreckers but the quotes for fixing or replacing the gearbox varied from 1000$ to 2200$...a lot too expansive for me.
So if anybody has a gearbox for sale for a good price, knows a good and cheap wrecker or can help my fix the gearbox i would be deeply grateful.

Thanks a lot.

regards

I have had a BJ42 gearbox rebuilt to go into my BJ74, I had fitted the updated parts as per the late H55F gearboxes. They are something like a new locking dog assembly for 5th gear. The older style parts are not available anymore.
