Neutral is SCARY !!
Even an auto in low 1st (or reverse) will provide some engine braking if the beast gets away from you downhill, but in neutral you have nothing to stop you hitting terminal velocity if you have a brake mishap. If you are going to have to use brakes to slow your auto why not leave it in gear as well as a backup? Trying to steer on a steep slope under brakes can result in locking wheels which makes steering very difficult, especially in reverse as the front wheels have little weight on them and tend to slide straight downhill no matter which way they are pointed.
Having said that, I have on occasions had to inch down short sections of very steep stuff very very slowly under brakes when low 1st was too fast, but I really don't recommend it and I hate the feeling when a wheel locks momentarily and the opposite one accelerates to double speed.

Do autos really have so little engine breaking that someone would opt for neutral?? I've backed down a very steep hill in an auto Prado (no I wasn't going to stray) and it didn't want to run away in 4L mind you TD prado have lower t/case gears about 2.8:1

It surprised me too, I cant imagine this being very good for the bands and clutches in the box, let alone being the wrong direction if u need to give it a stab of throttle to get out of a sticky situation!!!
